HORNELL, N.Y. (AP) - More than 100 members of a New York Army National Guard military police unit are heading to Mississippi before being deployed to the Persian Gulf. National Guard officials say a mobilization ceremony will be held Friday morning at the state armory in Hornell in Steuben County for 130 soldiers in the 222nd Military Police Company. The unit is leaving for training at Camp Shelby, Miss., before being deployed to Qatar. The 222nd was activated in 2005 and sent to Iraq, where its soldiers conducted more than 1,600 combat patrols in Baghdad. Since then, some soldiers from the unit have been re-deployed to Iraq or also served in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Guardsmen from the 222nd also helped in the recovery efforts on Long Island and in the Catskills after Hurricane Irene. (Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
