The third annual science technology engineering and mathematics 3 day event at Tamiu culminated today. More than 250 local area middle and high school students had the opportunity to explore biology and mathematics research. Today the students had the opportunity to meet NASA astronaut Scott Tingle and Congressman Henry Cuellar was also in attendance and spoke to the students about the importance of pursuing careers related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to statistics in 2005 Hispanics obtained only 7.5 percent of students graduated with a degree in science and engineering and 5.8 percent graduated with a degree in mathematics.
