Hypertension high blood pressure - pressure exerted on inner walls of arteries 120/80 is a normal blood pressure typically diagnosed with patients with a persistantly elevated blood pressure typically greater than 140/90 on multiple visits to the dr ususally seen in older individuals men & women develop essential hypertension - basically dont know cause usually in younger smaller subset of ppl secondary hyper where there is an underlying identifiable and potentially correctable cause of hypertension children can get it too - falls under secondary hypertension where there is most likely some other cause. Even obesity can cause hypertension treatable first step is lifestyle modification: main reccomendations are weight loss, decrease salt intake (on labels sodium content, want to be less tahn 2400 mg a day...typical american diet 4000mg a day). alcohol intake limited 1-2 drinks per day and typical exercise. typical tips for maintaining good health in general « Less
