Typically, the library is a pretty quiet place. And if you're talking, you'll probably find yourself getting shushed. But recently, one school was encouraging a little library chatter for a good reason. Dan Erdmann has more... (Dan Erdmann, KX News) The signs say, No food or beverages allowed, but this day was an exception. After all, a promise is a promise. (Bonita Lindseth, Rugby English Teacher) I thought we'd have a coffee house here. And the students who read their books by the end of the nine weeks, would get to come in here and have hot chocolate or cider, and then they will sit around and discuss their books. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) Bonita Lindseth teaches high school English at Rugby and she says the idea for a coffee house came from a friend and fellow teacher in Velva. Mrs. Lindseth gave her students a deadline for completing their books and she says nearly all of them did. Not only has the coffee house been a great motivator, but Lindseth says it also got them talking about things they normally wouldn't discuss. (Bonita Lindseth, Rugby English Teacher) It gets them interested in visiting and sharing their books with other people and thinking about the genre, thinking about themes, thinking about literary techniques and that sort of thing. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) And for her students, it was a time to share their opinions. Some even found them rubbing off on others. (Bite) Is it written kind of the same way as Twilight? Not as much of a love story. Cool. (Abi Jenkings, Rugby Junior) It's kinda funny, like one person over here is reading a really gothic book and the person over here is reading like this really girly, flirty story, but the person over here reading the gothic book is really interested. They're like, 'Oh, I want to take a look at that.' (Dan Erdmann, KX News) Not everyone loves to read, and Mrs. Lindseth knows that. She's just hoping to give her students that little extra push to open a book. (Bonita Lindseth, Rugby English Teacher) They were looking forward to it and I know that some of them finished their books, not so much for the grade, but to get the hot chocolate and cookies, and I guess whatever works as a motivator is a good thing. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) And although food and drinks may be prohibited, sometimes making an exception can go a long way. In Rugby, Dan Erdmann, KX News. Mrs. Lindseth says over 90 percent of her students finished their books in time for the coffee house and she's hoping to continue the project next quarter. « Less
