A wet fall is causing a little delay in our sunflower harvest. Just when producers started to put their combines in the field-it started to rain. This year's sunflower harvest is well behind last year-as well as the five year average. In fact, as of October 19th, only 14 percent of the sunflower harvest was completed in the state. That is only about half of what was harvested last year at this time. Larry Kleingartner with the National Sunflower Association says it is never too late to harvest, but the longer we wait the more chance for damage. (Larry Kleingartner / National Sunflower Assn.) You never add yield at this time of the year. The crop is done, and anytime the crop remains out on the field, wind damage, deer damage, bird damage, you are always going to have a potential of losing some yield. Kleingartner says quality shouldn't be affected, unless there is disease in the plant. « Less
