The Minot Police Department is teaming up with the Minot Air Force Base to help combat drunk driving and alcohol related offenses. As part of the First Term Airmen Center classes for military men and women stationed at Minot Air Force Base Crime Prevention Officer Rich Llewellyn, with the Minot PD, is teaching a section on North Dakota alcohol and drunk driving laws. Staff Sergeant Dale Gosney came up with the idea after a fellow airman was charged with DUI. He says with people from all over the country stationed at Minot Air Force Base, this new proactive approach to drinking hopefully will help people making better decisions. (Staff Sergeant Dale Gosney, Minot Air Force Base) Different states have different laws and I just wanted to get the word out and what better way than to have the Minot Police Department come because they are familiar with North Dakota laws and they can tell you flat out what's going to happen to you if you get a DUI. (Rich Llewellyn, Crime Prevention Officer-Minot PD) We're educating them on the North Dakota State statutes and the city ordinances and telling them what the consequences and penalties are for violating the different state laws. If they're educated they have that information to be able to make better or wiser decisions. Gosney says the classes are mandatory for first duty airmen and women at Minot Air Force Base. He says one class has already been conducted and was well-received. Base officials plan to evaluate the class and its effectiveness within the year. « Less
