It's her first trip to North Dakota. And this stop means Laura Bush has been to all fifty states while serving as First Lady... Laura Bush landed in Bismarck Thursday morning and had a packed schedule for the day traveling to various events. For many of the people who got to see her it was the first time they'd seen a First Lady in person. That includes reporter Donnell Preskey who had the opportunity to visit with Laura Bush one-on-one this afternoon. First Lady Laura Bush says she's always wanted to come to North Dakota and here she is. First Lady Laura Bush: [I've] now visited all 50 states...saved the best for last. That's made this stop even more special. Every event I do now seems to be the last one before retirement - maybe the save america's treasures event at the prairie church will be the last I do, said the First Lady. Each one is nostaglic now at this point. That time at the church - she says was very memorable. As I got ready to leave the started to sing God Bless America, it was really sweet. Exactly what I would expect, really solid American's with solid values and love our country. Unique? no it doesn't happen everywhere. It was really what I expected to see in North Dakota. Historic Preservation and education are two things Laura Bush has spent time working on as First Lady. That's what brought her to North Dakota. She's a former teacher and librarian and she tells Donnell Preskey she'll continue working on educational issues even after she leaves the White House but it'll be on her own time... I'm looking forward to free time, laying on couch a bit, not really, I'll keep working. The First Lady says she will miss representing our country around the world, and miss having days like this. Seeing the best of communities, see people who want to sing God Bless America, and see schools like this where teachers are dedicated to making sure their students get the best education. We really do have wonderful country. And I get to see it in the very front row, and I'm going to miss that a lot. « Less
