All women want the best for their children...so it is important to prepare them for the best possible life, even before they enter the world. The dangers of smoking while pregnant are becoming more and more clear...and there are plenty of reasons to stop smoking while pregnant...and for good. Perry Olson has more in this week's Eye on Health. (Renae Byre - Tobacco Treatment Specialist) There are 599 products in a cigarette and when you light it, it makes 4000 chemicals... (Perry Olson - KX News) Certainly not good for you...and absolutly not good for that life growing inside of you... (Dr. Margaret Nordell, OB-GYN - Trinity Health) Since 1950 we have known that smoking causes small birthweight babies and this is mostly caused by premature rupture of membranes. So if you are smoking you have a high chance of premature rupture and low birthweight babies. (Perry Olson - KX News) The trouble can last later into life for the child as well...higher chances of having asthma and even cardiac problems are seen with kids whose mother's smoked during pregnancy...and this too... (Dr. Nordell) Behavior problems. Aggressive behavior like ADHD. (Perry Olson) It may be obvious then, smoking should be stopped during pregnancy...but it isn't an easy thing for some women to do... (Dr. Nordell) It is very hard. It is like smoking in general...very hard to quick and addictive. There are not lots of easy ways to quit. (Perry Olson - KX News) This stat isn't encouraging...only five percent of those who try and quit alone will be successful but using the state's tobacco quitline that number goes to 37 and people who attend classes at local health units have a 47 percent quit rate...so get the help... (Renae Byre - Tobacco Treatment Specialist) The counciling increases your chances of stopping and when you add medication it increases that again... (Perry Olson - KX News) Here is that quitline number, 1-866-388-QUIT. Any questions on pregnancy and smoking? Contact your local health district office. With your Eye on Health, Perry Olson, KX News.
