A Dickinson police officer was justified in shooting a man outside this house... A Dickinson police officer is cleared of any wrong doing today... You remember one month ago Joel Wetzel broke into a Dickinson home on 1st Avenue SW. He opened fire on a man and woman living there. A bullet hit the man in the leg. When officers arrived Wetzel pointed his gun at officer Jeremy Moser. It was then Sergeant Dan Brown shot Wetzel in his side. Today at a Press Conference, Assistant Chief of Police Stewart Stenberg, says Sergeant Browns actions were justified... (Cpt. Stewart Stenberg/ Dickinson Police Dept.) An in-depth investigation was conducted by two outside agencies, the Stark County Sheriff's Department and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The investigation revealed that Sgt. Brown, a 20 veteran of the Dickinson police force responded professionally and acted appropriately considering the circumstances that were present at the time of the officer's arrival at the scene. Captain Stenberg says Sergant Brown, and the other three officers involved are doing well and have been back to work for three weeks now... (Cpt. Stewart Stenberg/ Dickinson Police Dept.) The offender Joel Wetzel was hospitalized for two weeks. He's still in jail. Wetzel is charged with Reckless Endangerment and Burglary for the incident. Assistant Stark County State's Attorney, Jim Hope says Wetzel could face additional charges for the incident. Hope says he's still waiting for reports from the Dickinson Police Department and the State's Bureau of Criminal Investigation.  « Less
