Clouds aren't just puffy white cotton balls in the sky. They can take on many different shapes, sizes and even colors. Ryan explains how and why in this week's weather extra. Over the past week we have seen some very interesting weather. Tornado warnings, Severe thunderstorms with lightning and hail. And all of these weather events come with clouds. Clouds of many different colors. But what turns these ominous clouds into beautiful photos? The light from the sun can do some very crazy things to a white canvas like a cloud. The best colors of clouds can be seen as the sun sets. Just as the sky can turn as many colors as in the rainbow, so too can the clouds. As the sun sets the light gets refracted that is to say the light gets bent, as it goes through the atmosphere. When white light gets bent it breaks apart into its different colors. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. Just like a rainbow...except on a much larger scale. Because of the bending of the light and little particles of dust, water and even ice in the sky the colors become more brilliant.
