Senator Dorgan made another stop in the area today when he visited the North Dakota American Legion Convention to discuss his fight to expand veterans' education benefits. Dorgan said a new GI Bill that he co-sponsored will pass congress next week. When President Bush signs the bill, 4,500 members of the North Dakota Guard and Reserve will be eligible for significantly expanded education benefits. He said this bill gives similar benefits to those after World War II. (Sen. Byron Dorgan, -D- ND) I'm really proud of this. This new GI Bill is important to thousands of North Dakota soldiers who answered the call to go to Iraq and Afghanistan, to hundreds of thousands of American soldiers who should expect their government to do what it did post-second world war. Dorgan also pointed out that the original GI Bill returned seven dollars to the economy for every dollar spent on education benefits for veterans. « Less
