Hello on this Wednesday, the 23 day of April 2008. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update. Senator Hillary Clinton won yesterday's Pennsylvania primary. The New York Senator beat her rival, Senator Barack Obama, by about 10 percentage points. She picked up a majority of the state's 158 delegates. Her victory follows wins in Ohio, New York, Texas and California. But despite yesterday's results, Obama is still ahead in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Israel has resumed pumping fuel to the Gaza Strip. That's to avoid a shutdown of the Palestinian territory's only power plant. Gaza energy officials had warned that the power plant would have stopped production today without a fuel delivery. Israel has cut fuel to Gaza twice this month in response to Palestinian militant attacks. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will call on President Bush to jump start the Middle East peace talks when the two meet tomorrow. Israel and the Palestinian Authority agreed last year to try to reach a peace deal in 2008. Abbas will reportedly ask Bush to pressure Israel to freeze Jewish settlement activity in the West Bank and ease checkpoints for Palestinians. Earlier this week, Bush met with Jordan's King Abdullah to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian process. President Bush denies that the U.S. economy is in a recession. He instead called it an economic slowdown yesterday in New Orleans. The President pointed out that the economy grew in the last quarter of 2007 and that figures are not yet in for the first quarter of 2008. A recession usually means that two consecutive quarters of the gross domestic product has decreased. But in the U.S., a private organization makes an official declaration of a recession that takes into account the depth of the decline and is oftentimes announced after a recovery has already begun.
