Bad weather in Iraq has slowed the return to the United States for members of the 164th Engineering Battalion, based in Minot. The group was expected to have been back at Fort Shelby in Mississippi by the end of last week, but state Adjutant General Dave Sprynczynatyk said today that nasty weather forced a delay. Last Monday, he and Governor Hoeven told family members of the 164th that they might be home to North Dakota by late this week. The general says, even with the delay, the soldiers are all together now in Kuwait, and waiting for space on a transport for the trip back to the US. So it could be late next week before they're home... (Gen. Dave Sprynczynatyk, ND National Guard) We're hopeful we can help move them through the outprocessing at Camp Shelby in 3-4 maybe 5 days and if they're able to arrive there by the end of this week, I expect, I would hope, we'd be able to have them back in North Dakota by the end of next week. 191 members of the 164th have been serving in Iraq since September. « Less
