Hello, it's Wednesday, March 5, 2008. I'm Rebecca Field in for Kristin Volk today with your UPI top news update. Hillary Clinton is celebrating big wins from last night's election. Clinton won key primaries in Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island...ending a streak of 12 straight wins for Barack Obama. Obama won Vermont last night. Now the candidates are focusing their attention on Pennsylvania...the next big state to grab delegates. That primary is April 22. There are also caucuses in Wyoming on Saturday and a primary March 11 in Mississippi. Meanwhile Arizona Senator John McCain has won the Republican presidential nomination. McCain took all four states yesterday...Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont. The Senator clinched the nomination, taking more than the required amount of delegates...he needed 1,191. An aide for his opponent, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee dropped out of the election last night. President Bush is expected to endorse McCain later today at the White House. Israeli troops returned to Gaza yesterday...just hours after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged peace in the West Bank. Rice spoke in Ramallah yesterday, encouraging peace talks to resume between Israel and Palestine. She met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and then dined with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as fighting returned between the countries. Israel had originally halted a 5 day offensive targeting Palestinian militants on Monday. There's no word on why the fighting resumed. Quarterback Brett Favre is saying goodbye to the Green Bay Packers. The football star is reportedly ending his 17 year long career. Favre tells ESPN he's mentally tired. The 38 year old has been named MVP three times and has set league records like most career touchdown passes. He's also had one of the best seasons of his career. The Packers general manager thanked Favre yesterday...for his years of dedication to the team. That's all for today and tune in tomorrow for another headline update. « Less
