State wildlife officials are proposing changes aimed at reducing the growing elk numbers outside the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in southwestern North Dakota. The Game and Fish Department is proposing an increase of 140 licenses to a total of 561, and also allowing lottery license holders to hunt in either of two southwestern units after the first three days of the season. Game and Fish also is proposing a fifth elk unit to cover all of the state outside of the four existing elk units and the Turtle Mountains. Governor Hoeven must approve those and other proposed changes. The National Park Service is studying options on how to reduce growing elk numbers inside Theodore Roosevelt National Park. « Less
