The largest beef recall in U.S. history is affecting more people than you may think. Sarah Gustin tells us how it's impacting one North Dakota school. One school is facing a challenge they have never had to deal with before. (Trissa Ford / Christ the King School Chief Cook) "We got an e-mail this morning that it is recall, so we are still just waiting for them to tell us what to do with it." Of the 143 million pounds of frozen beef being recalled, North Dakota's Department of Public Instruction says 123 tons of ground beef is affected in the state. It's worth more than 370-thousand dollars. DPI says about one-third of the meat has been delivered to school and other commodity programs. (Wade Moser / ND Stockman's Association) "But, what I think will happen is they are going to have to take that product back to their plant, reprocess it, probably into dog food or into some other product except for human consumption. I don't think the USDA will allow them to put that back into the food chain." Ford says Christ the King School includes hamburger items on their lunch menu at least twice a week. She says the school orders at least sixty to eighty pounds of hamburger each week. And they aren't letting this recall affect their lunch menu meals. (Trissa Ford / Christ the King School Chief Cook) "We've had to kinda scramble and find other sources for hamburger because we get that mostly from our commodities programs so our vendors that we usually order things from weekly were able to supply hamburger for us at an additional cost of course to our budget." But when preparing more than 200 meals a day, the extra cost for hamburger can really add up. (Trissa Ford / Christ the King School Chief Cook) "The one week that I did order it from the vendors it was an additional, well over 200 dollars for that week. So it will be a considerable amount." Ford says in order to keep beef on the menu they will continue to buy hamburger from other vendors. Reporting for KX news, I am Sarah Gustin. Ford says Christ the King was notified about the beef recall on January 31. « Less
