The wait is finally over... A newly re-constructed Washington Street is now open to traffic. City commissioners held a ribbon cutting ceremony on the street this afternoon. Folks from the neighborhood gathered around to watch the first cars drive on the widened street. Marilyn O'Leary Lips lives within a block of Washington. She says neighbors are happy about the project that is 50 years in the making... (Marilyn O'Leary Lips, Lives Near Washington St.) We're really excited to have all this...new streets, and all the lights...and I live in this area to so it is really exciting. I think it will be very positive. I'm not worried at all about the traffic. City Commissioner Connie Sprynzynatyk reminds drivers that Washington Street runs through a residential neighborhood with a lot of children. (Connie Sprynzynatyk, City Commissioner) Washington is an arterial street. And it does carry quite a traffic load. It carries 14-thousand cars a day and so we need to be very vigilant in this neighborhood. The five-and-a-half month project finished three weeks ahead of schedule.
