Harvest is back in high gear for many farmers in North Central North Dakota. Combines are chewing their way through the tall stalky Corn field in the cool October weather trying now to get a jump on the field work before wet weather sets in this weekend. (Mike Smith, Farmer) We just started out corn today and it's running about 18 percent moisture. Mike Smith was combining this field for his son south of Minot earlier today. (Smith) My son increased his corn by twice as many as last year. He says before they started cutting they expected yields to be down a bit because of hot July and August weather, but what they found was a pleasant surprise. (Mike Smith) Bushel wise it's good. It's going to be in the 100 bushel for us so we're really satisfied. The extra bushel will certainly make their work a challenge though. The Smith's planted quite a bit more corn this year, most of which is already spoken for. (Mike) Actually it's contracted with Blue Flint for November delivery. We're storing it on the farm, try to get some down to them so trucks can keep up. The same is true for most new corn acres in the region, although early yield reports are mixed. The early planted corn is looking much better than that which was planted later. Corn acres are just starting to fall and it will be a few weeks before a full profile will be compiled on how the growing corn acres are fairing in Western and Central North Dakota.
