Just how serious was the accidental transport of nuclear warheads from Minot Air Force Base to Barksdale Air Force Base on August 30th? The answer might be the news we got today - US Secretary of the Air Force Michael Wynne is paying a visit to the Minot base this week to see for himself how nuclear weapons are guarded and handled. A statement from Minot Air Force Base today says Secretary Wynne takes the recent breakdown in the munitions system very seriously and is committed to ensuring munitions processes are safe, secure and absolutely reliable. North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad says a visit from the Air Force secretary is important - and not a common occurrence. (Sen. Kent Conrad) I don't think this can be considered routine. This is the secretary of the Air Force coming because there has been a very serious matter develop. He is an outstanding person and I think he wants to hear, as he should, what happened here to make certain it never happens again. Conrad says the Air Force secretary will be at Minot Air Force Base this Friday. Friday is the day set aside by Air Combat Command to stand down from normal operations as a response to the August 30th incident. « Less
