Besides baseball, there's another tradition in Mandan during the holiday, and this year, it will reach its 'Pearl Anniversary.' That's because the 2007 Fourth of July Road Race is now the 30th Annual. It began in 1977, with a 10K that had about 50 runners and was won by Leon Kleingartner of Dickinson. Two years later, current Bismarck High coach Darrell Anderson took top honors. The idea comes from Jim Fuglie, who was then the editor of the Mandan News. He consulted Stan Stelter, who was a runner, and the rest, as they say, is histroy. (Stan Stelter:) At that time, back in 77, there really weren't that many road races in this area and maybe even across the country, but certainly in this area. So, it was his idea to come up with the road race and I happened to be the guy that knew something about it, so we joined up and it has been a really perfect fit. Over the years, the course has changed three times and a 5K has been added. If you're interested in participating, just head down to Main Street at 'Central Market' tomorrow morning. Registration begins at 7:00 central. The cost for preregistrants is 12 dollars, while its 15 for those signing up on race day. The 10K begins at 8:00 while the 5K run and 5K walk will start shortly afterwards.  « Less
