In the coming days and weeks, the state Game and Fish Department will take a look at creating two mountain lion hunting zones for next year. At upcoming advisory board meetings, they'll consider establishing Zone 1 just south of Lake Sakakawea, in the southwestern part of the state. Zone 2 would encompass the rest of the state. Hunting regulations would then be set based on the zone: hunters would be able to kill only five lions in Zone 1 from August 31st through May 9th, whereas they wouldn't set limits on the number of lions that could be killed in Zone 2. Officials say they've received 16 reports of mountain lion sightings this year, and 26 last year. Governor Hoeven would have to approve the plan before the Department could instate it. « Less
