A bill to help protect you from identity theft is on its way to the governors desk. The House passes a bill unanimously to allow North Dakotans to freeze their credit information. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says it's a way to prevent identity theft. Under the new law, you can prohibit credit agencies from releasing any information in your file. Right now credit agencies can give out your credit report. (Wayne Stenehjem/ ND Attorney General) House bill 1417 permits a North Dakota citizen to tell the credit reporting agency Stop, don't give my credit information to anyone. And, the law will prohibit then, the dissemination of that history. Therefor, there will be no new accounts open for these identity thieves. Putting a security freeze on your account costs five dollars. You can freeze it for up to two years. The bill still needs Governor Hoeven's signature.
