This remarkable reunion was more than 60 years in the making. The veterans are talking, in person, for the first time since the day they jumped out of their B-17, landing in Germany, in 1943. They were on their way to bomb a ball-bearings factory. George Ott was piloting the plane... Richard Spellerberg was operating the radio. Reporter Sarah Klaphake was there for the first moments the men saw each other again. (Sarah Klaphake): For years, George Ott and Richard Spellerberg didn't know if anyone else, who was in their B-17 when it went down, was still alive. Now... they're meeting face to face. For the first time since the day they became prisoners of war... Ott and Spellerberg are putting their memories together. 60 planes were lost and 600 men died that day. After a bit of time to catch up...The two are off to a ceremony honoring them and other P-O-W's. Ott and Spellerberg spent over a year in a German prison, but were never together. The B-17 is where they're stories part. Today they're stories meet again. As they look into the eyes of the person who truly understands the stories and the memories. The only other person in this world who knows what happened as their B-17 went down that Black Thursday. Ott drove to Fargo from Dickinson Monday to meet Spellerberg... who flew in from Illinois. They and 29 other POW's were honored at the ceremony in West Fargo last night. It was a stars and stripes filled room...With pride pouring out...To and from the men we call heroes. « Less
