Members of the Dearborn Sustainability Coalition visited the Great Lakes Recycling facility in Huron Township March 30 for a first-hand view of the process that handles recycled materials from Dearborn’s big green curbside bins. The very labor-intensive process at the state of the art facility is called a single stream recycling because residents don’t need to separate the recyclables themselves. Incoming materials are delivered to the tipping floor, with a capacity of 8,000 tons, and then fed through a series of conveyors tended by fast moving workers. At the end the separated products are compressed into large bales and then sold to companies who use them to make new products. « Less
