Late Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency for Kern and nine other counties where crop damage continues to mount from this week's killer freeze. It will be at least five days before a full assessment is in, but state agriculture officials said damage to fruit and vegetable crops overall will be greater and more widespread than the freeze of 1998. « Less
