Dr. Kenneth Keller nearly runs out of adjectives to describe his reaction to new breast cancer screening recommendations. Keller was reacting to a report from the US Preventive Services Task Force. That group said women should no longer get yearly mammograms beginning at age 40. Instead, it said the cancer detection should wait until age 50, and then be done every two years, and end at age 74. Keller says every reputable agency that deals with cancer - including the American Cancer Society - says the new recommendations are ridculous. He agrees and thinks the new guidelines are a peek of what's to come with government involved in health care. (Dr. Kenneth Keller, Dept. of Radiology) "I think this is coming down from the federal government as a way of beginning to control costs and ration care. I think you're starting to see what happens when the government gets into things they haven't done before in health care. I think this is where this is going and people should be very concerned. This is just, just the beginning." Dr. Keller says 41% if breast cancer dianoses in the past 11 years at Trinity have come in women who would no longer get mammograms under the new recommendations. That's why Trinity is continuing its existing mammogram recommendations beginning at age 40. « Less
