So far they've only caught students pulling a fire alarm on one of the new cameras on campus. And in a perfect world, school officials would keep it that way. Reporter Amber Schatz shows why BSC is amping up its security measures. (NAT OF MOUSE) (Dave Clark) 7:00 "It's not to be big brother or big sister, it's just to provide a higher level of support to our employees and to our students." It's not about a spike in crime... but rather... a spike of people on campus. (Dave Clark/BSC Vice President) 3:10 "We are now over 4,000 students on campus and online, we're a very open, accessible campus, 16 hours of everday we have activities going on here at BSC." For the past 18 months... School officials have added an emergency notification system, a campus intercom system, and today will have installed around a total of 82 security cameras. (Scott Brand) 10:48 "Cameras basically are there for a reason if we have an issue, we can rely on those cameras possibly to go back and look at event that occurred." From his office... Scott Brand, a newly armed guard, can monitor nearly every building entrance and exit... add to that, parking lots and high-use areas... (Scott Brand) 11:42 "Well I would hope that parents, students would think that I'm taking a very proactive approach in college here." (STUDENT MOS) School officials are taking action BEFORE anything bad happens. Something most colleges have to prepare for in this day and age... considering the amount of school shootings happening around the country. (Scott) 12:29 "You never know what's going to transpire." (Dave Clark) 4:46 "What we have in place is not going to stop a deranged individual from acting out if that were to unfortunately occur, but what it would do, we would be able to communicate in a much quicker fashion, with those students and staff, that we serve here at BSC. The enhanced security has cost around 150-thousand dollars...of both state and college funds. And the effort is on-going. (Scott Brand) 12:34 "It's been proven that whether it be in emergency services area, emergency management area, that you train and exercise for those types of events so in case someday God forbid, that happens, we're prepared." Amber Schatz, KX News. BSC officials say they have had to use the emergency notification system, which includes texts and emails to students... for weather related issues, and school closings... but nothing more serious than that. « Less
