North Dakota turns 120 years old today... But it's hard to put a number on the amount of historic moments that make our state special. Reporter Amber Schatz takes us back... From an incredible expedition... ( "My favorite part of North Dakota history is Lewis and Clark" ... to our claim on incredible leaders... "Teddy Roosevelt, national park, I ride a lot in the Badlands and that's got to be one of my favorite things." Evidence of North Dakota's rich heritage is everywhere. But more than a century ago... President Benjamin Harrison made it official for Dakota Territory...Signing North Dakota's statehood papers, alphabetically beating out South Dakota as the 39th state to enter the union. (Rick Collin/State Historical Society) Ben Harrison did not wish to get involved in the controversy, the rivalry, so what he had done was he had the two statehood documents covered up, the only thing exposed was signature line where he was signing... that was the way he avoided showing any favoritism about bringing one state in before the other..." That was 120 years ago today... But many North Dakotans don't need a birthday to remind them of favorite moments in our state's history. (Rick Collin ) "We have right here on capitol grounds we have statue of Sakakawea who accompanied Lewis and Clark and was an invaluable asset to their expedition." ( Florestine Grant) "As you drive through reservation, Standing Rock, you can see where they went through and what they did." (Orlin Lyng) "Teddy Roosevelt, the ranching he did during pretty tough times is pretty interesting." A chapter of history that many North Dakotans have a lot of pride for. But state historians say the state is still making waves today. (Rick Collin/State Historical Society) "Today we are cutting edge technology, agriculture, we're one of the leading states of agriculture in country, top wheat producers and other commodities, we're now number four in oil production..." Proving there's a lot more history to come for the Peace Garden State... Amber Schatz, KX News. « Less
