An early winter-like storm has hit North Dakota - and it's caused some dangerous travel conditions. Two Texas men were killed when their pickup slid on an icy Highway Two near Stanley and rolled over several times. The accident happened about 5:15 this morning, throwing both men from the cab. The driver died at the scene - and his passenger died after being taken to the Stanley hospital. By later in the morning - as far west as here near Ray - there had been several accidents caused by the extremely slippery conditions. Those slick roads were caused by a mixture of snow and freezing rain. One trooper we talked to - after only about an hour on the job - said it had already been a busy day. (Timothy Coughlin, NDHP Trooper) "We've already had a couple of accidents so it's very slippery and rain is still coming down and it's not getting warm fast enough. Looks like DOT is out putting sand down so hopefully that'll help." Department of Transportation trucks were out in force and helped clear up the major highways for a while - but the continued precipitation and colder temperatures expected tonight will likely make for more very dangerous travel in the next several hours.  « Less
