The debate over the UND Fighting Sioux logo and nickname isn't over. The State Board of Higher Education says it needs more time to make a decision about keepingor dropping the indian head logo. The board today voted to extend the deadline for a decicion. It HAD set an October 1st date to drop the name. Board members say a misunderstanding about the date of tribal elections on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation prompted today's vote. The reservation held its general elections Wednesday. Higher ed board members want an extra 30 to 60 days... to get the opinions of the newly-elected council members. (Duaine Espegard/ Board Member) "I dont want to adddress this again. I want to give proper time to have a democratic process work out on the reservation. I am sensitive to the tribe the university, to its system to its leadership. I do beleive we have to follow the process out." The board says it will drop the nickname unless the state's two namesake tribes sign 30-year agreements giving the school permission to keep the nickname. Earlier this month, the Spirit Lake Tribal Council gave its support to keeping the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.  « Less
