They're trying to see who can improve his fitness the most over a 15-week period. Tom has taken the challenge seriously - as you'll see in this week's report. (Tom Schrader, KX Weather) andamp;quot; We are now three weeks into our fitness comptetition and I'm competing against Joe Goldade and Perry Olson. But first I gotta tell you that as far as eating things are really working out. My nutrition counselor Tina Merck has been working with me very closely on better eating habits and things to eat that are more healthy. I thought it would be pretty tough but it turned out easier than I thought. I want to show you my original fitness evaluation. Now here's how it works. These are percentages compared to others in my age group. So I'm pretty average in sit flex and crunches but well above normal in the endurance bench press test. Certainly there's room to improve. Here's where I really have some work cut out for me. My body fat could be a whole lot lower, my body mass index could be better, but the bicycle test which measures how well my body uses oxygen to perform work is really low. And actually I'm ok with that because back in June I had an injury that kept me from my Tae Kwan Do classes or any exercise so a good exercise program should bring that number up a lot. But I was surprised with one thing and that's how hard Joe Goldade works out. After seeing how much he works out I really needed to come up with something I thought was even tougher. After all, it is a competition. I work out 6 days a week and I love it. Every other day I play handball at the Y, but you can rent a court at the dome as well. This is a great anerobic and aerobic workout that burns roughly 8 hundred calories an hour in a hard singles match. Then there's bands class. I do these at ATA but your favorite health club may have it or you can do it at home. I love working out the upper body, but as far as bands class on the lower body I think I'd rather have a root canal. Then once I saw Perry and Joe doing the drums classes I wondered if someone as chronologicaly challenged, ok, old as me could do it. So I called up Brick Studio and asked if I could try it out. Wow, that's as fun a workout as I've had in a long long time. We all have a long way to go, but I'm eating healthier and getting in shape. Tom Schrader KX News.andamp;quot; « Less
