"The Ugly Truth" 2 stars Rated R 1 hour 40 minutes Katherine Heigl Gerard Butler Cheryl Hines John Michael Higgins Kevin Connolly The ugly truth about "The Ugly Truth" is that you'll never believe for a minute that the bright and beautiful Katherine Heihl's an insecure control freak who hasn't had sex in eleven months. There's hardly anything about this off-color romantic comedy that is believable. Gerard Butler's the obnoxious love Guru who supposedly knows her better than she knows herself. The familiar plot straight out of the cliché' handbook has Heigl as the uptight TV producer reluctantly hiring Butler as the romantic fixer upper to give the news more sex appeal. And to give Heigl's love life more pizzazz by teaching her how to manipulate men. If Butler wasn't so self-conscious about his phony American accent, he might actually have been charming. Their scenes together seem strained and artificial and at no time do you ever believe she needs his help to seduce her lukewarm suitors. Sixteen year old boys will be positively drooling over the dirty jokes, of which there really aren't too many of those. The movie's moment of truth comes when you realize early on, the highly predictable conclusion, and you don't even have to be sixteen years old to figure that one out. Students of romantic comedy can spot a lemon a mile away. And "The Ugly Truth winds up in the sitcom trash barrel with 2 stars.
