cat person, but it's because of thishi cat. c i had a cat that my grandparents had when i was growing up that used to claw me and his at me as ii came up the stairs, so ito tooitk me a little while to g tet over my foreof cats. >> certainly you have,ta because you're ann assistant professor at brown, a doctor, and this is your first attempt at being an author, and the boo is really interesting, because even though it's non-fiction, it r neads like fiction, which is ones of my o favori te kinds of books tods read, d, but what was its about oscar that made you think i'm going to put ut pen to paper here and i'm going to wri te about this cat? >> i thought initially it was a fascinatin story. the idea that this cat would have the ability to sort of tell when somebody was about to pass, , was something that caught my eyey eventually. en i wasn't the first to come upp with it, but certainly, as it percolated up to me, i thought, this is really something that i'd love to put to paper. >> if fact, oscar has been right in about 50 patients, has he ever been wrong? >> there have been a couple occasions over time where he's either been off the floor, there's been a couple of patients asked us not to havet him on the floor. >> so people are aware when they come to the nursingme home.th h >> oh, yeah. and my real worry, actually, after the 2007 publicity, that, there would be a mass exodus from the nursing home, but b actually, the reverse has happened, as part of this book, i went and i actuallyy talked with family members who had had oscar there at the end of life and the universal theme has always been that he's been a source of great, you know, companionship, and compaiossion really. >> because certainly you don't onthink that oscar is causingau these deaths, but rather, that athe is simply sensing that losslo of life is near.ne >> he's h absolutely not causing the deaths, andth it's one of those things that these patients p on the floor unfortunately are all very sick, they all have end stage forms of dementia, and most of them can't walk or communicate, so we knowe, unfortunately, that theyt are terminal. but oscar being thereos is definitely a formm of companionship at the end for t them. >> whatt is your hunch, just lastly, as tola how he's able to do this, howis he has this gift as you call it?t? >> well, i think that he's probably smelling something, whether it's a fermone or a smell. certainly behaviorally, there's lyer also a pattern of that, that he's patterning thete wonderful behavior of the staff, butta in the end, he's, beehen than answers. newschannel 15's janice allen spoke to him earlier today. he's not happy. not at all. he says not only was he left stranded, but he has yet to hear a reason why. 7:10 "i just can't believe a nursing home can take a patient, and simply abandon them." a week inside cameron memorial community hospital...and still, 46-year-old gregory george doesn't understand how he ended up there. last monday he says he was snatched by workers at his nursing home....and put into a van. 55:22 "they said, we're taking you to angola to the hospital for help, and im like what kind of help, nobody would say." so, george ended up inside the e-r. by that night, he was cleared to leave, but officials from his home, wesley health care in auburn, never came to pick him up. a week later he's still abandoned, but not admitted as an official patient. 11:19 "we contacted them a number of times, just with unsatisfactory results." butt to 11:28 "the comment was that they were no longer able to meet his needs." but george says his condition--and needs--haven't changed. he's spent the past year and a half at wesley...after a surgery left him with with a permanent trach tube. s/u 21:30 "so, who's footing the bill? probably medicare or medicaid, but the answer to the biggest question--why george was dropped off in the first place--still has no answer." george has a few theories though. he complained freqently about television noise there...and thinks his dumping may have been in retaliation. officials at wesley refused to comment on the story..but say they welcome, and will cooperate with any investigation. we've learned that this case has been turned over to adult protective services. and george meanwhile, has been transferred to a hospital in marion for now. new tonight at six: "she just doesn't even have any interest." after all she was raised by a red heeler after her own mom died after giving birt "the only problem is now the pig thinks she's a dog. heidi olson says pig pig's amazing story almost ended just two days after she was born. as the only rviving piglet of her litter, heidi says her mother almost crushed her after becoming ill with complications with birth. "the mother pig was so sick she actually laid on her and didn't realize it." when heidi's husband finally realized it, the tiny piglet was in rough shape. "she squished her flat. she was flat as a pancake, no heartbeat (and) cold." but like any animal-loving farmer, he took action. Lakins says the couple have tried to work things out with their neighbor for a year, but Garcia says they have never talked to her. Garcia said, "If they had, maybe I would've talked to them. I mean, I would have raised my voice and everything, but I would have talked to them."
