<media:text>husband of a woman convicted of being an army deserter during the iraq war. under a plea deal made with army... kimberly rivera is supposed to serve 10-months for the crime she pled guilty. now she's turning to colorado senators to get out sooner. her husband... mario rivera, sat down with krdo newschannel 13's joe dominguez. joe's live at fort carson with new information at ten. kimberly's husband believes that 10 month sentence she's now serving should have begun long ago. there's a simple goal behind this handwritten letter by kimberly rivera to u-s senators in colorado. 55... we're trying to get them to help out and try to at the very least reduce her sentence so she doesn't have to have the baby in prison. kimberly rivera's husband mario wears her military dog tags next to his wedding ring. he's fighting to get his wife wife back home sooner for several reasons including their kids. 653 They ask for their mom everyday they ask why she has to do this all she did wrong was she couldn't kill anyone. mario feels like his wife's refusal to return to iraq after one tour of duty out or moral objections to the war is about more than just punishment against her. 211 The prosecution's own words -if you check the transcripts from the trial- is they wanted to make an example of her. and now he's hoping this letter writing campaign can force the military to consider the time she's already spent in jail as part of that 10 month sentence. 423 If you think about she's already been punished for eight months and separated from the kids for 8 months and on top of that you add 10 more months. we asked fort carson for their response to this request. a public affairs referred our questions to the rivera's lawyers. live jd krdo newschannel 13. in the letter to senators... kimberly rivera calls herself a "conscientious objector." but a spokesman for the 4th i-d tells newschannel 13... there's an application process for that protection... and rivera never applied for it. she also signed a form when she enlisted ... that said she did not object to war. formal</media:text>

Bush Presidential Library and Museum opened to the public on May 1, 2013.

Located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, the 226,000 square foot complex houses two facilities, the Bush Presidential Library and Museum and the Bush Institute.

The museum’s goal is to create an interactive experience for visitors. An exact replica of the Situation Room and the oval office, including the President’s desk, can be found. There are interactive parts of the museum, where you can simulate being the President in a live-action theater.

According to the New York Times, the theater works this way: An audience is confronted with a dire situation — such as the invasion of Iraq or Hurricane Katrina. They have four minutes to gather advice from video sources, they then vote on the appropriate action. After the decision is revealed, a video of The Decider, former President Bush himself, explains the decision he made at the time.

Planning a visit? Let us know and we’d love to hear about your experience.</td></tr></table>

<media:text>traumatic stress disorder. it's a constant emotional battle some veterans cope with through the help of a service dog. the newscenter's trishna begam found out the dogs are not being covered by v.a. mike enlisted in the marines where he served in the first gulf war during desert shield and desert storm. ...then went on to join the department of defense to fight the war on terror in the middle east. when he returned home to kingston, ny he was diagnosed with p-t- s-d...it's through that diagnoses that he met russell. senator schumer tells me the plan is to have legislation for this in place for next year's budget so it's likely to come up in october. john -- some people may want to help mike out right now.... in fact, people have already reached out to me wanting to help with money. and we all want to help our heroes our veterans...for mike this is not about him...there is a bigger isssue at hand here for him...he wants change for all veterans. the biggest impact according to senator schumer is for you at home to write a letter to the va about this issue urging them to change their polcy. we have a way to do that on fox23 we've linked you to al the addresses. some men are doing work on a barge. when all</media:text>

<media:text>behind bars -- an iraqi prison has released a pastor-- thanks to the efforts of a local ministry and an oklahoma senator. we first brought you the story of ááápastor jamal hamzahááá back in february. fox23's sharon phillips sat down with the man partly responsible for his pastor jamal hamzah was imprisoned north of mosul in iraq -- after men raided his home and arrested him without charges in 2011.prior to that - dr. terry law had been in iraq delivering food to refugees with the help of his FRIEND.7:10 "we were in a very dangerous area and their were people in that area who saw what we were doing and they knew we were American and they knew we were Christian."JAMAL was arrested and thrown into an iraqi prison, and back here in the states - law wrestled WITH WHAT TO DO.8:04 "how can I influence something that's happening halfway around the world."THAT'S WHEN HE contacted senator jim inhofe FOR HELP.8:42 " I called Jim's office and he agreed to write a letter on Jamal's behalf to the prime minister of Kurdistan."20:06 Sharon bridge; "these are just a few of the letters that Senator Inhofe wrote to the president of Iraq asking for Jamal's release."WITH LETTERS IN HAND -- law and his team traveled to kurdisn to meet with government officials.law was told the only way jamal could be released would be through personal amnesty - similar to a presidential pardon.12:35 "no president has ever offered any Christian pastor who has converted to Christianity from Islam, ever offered private amnesty."ON APRIL 4TH LAW received an email stating that their efforts had worked -- and jamal had been let go. 13:34 "jamal comes on the phone and he says, Terry Law and then he began to sob and he sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. It was a very emotional moment for me."IRAQ released jamal on a humanitarian basis due to his severe headaches -- thought to be caused by a brain tumor. after seeing three neurosurgeon s - it was later revealed that his headachewere caused by three nodes in his sinuses and can easily be treated.</media:text>

<media:text>up next on news 10nbc. District Attorney: It's very, very disappointing when a police officer is charged with a crime. a former police officer in clifton springs is accused of forging his chief's signature to avoid being deployed to the war zone in iraq with his military police unit 2003. there's a whole lot more to this story... investigators say they uncovered the officer's scheme to avoid serving in iraq---while looking into a house fire. we first told you last night at 11... that steven eagley and his wife melissa--- who is a special education teacher---are charged in connection with two fires at their home. the first was in 2010. she is also accused of deliberately setting a second fire at their home 18 months later. today we learned new information about his deployment. ray levato trackeddown the clifton springs police chief to get some answers. and, ray joins us live with the rest of the story...the first fire at the eagley home was determined to be accidental. but investigators say the second fire was arson.and as they began looking into it deeper -- they discovered that eagley had used his police chief'sstationery to write a hardship letter to his new york army national guard unit nine years earlier. Michael Tantillo is Ontario County District Attorney. Michael Tantillo, Ontario County District Attorney: Couple ofthingsare obviously disturbing. Anytime a police officer is charged with acrime it's very disappointing to those of us in law enforcement. Eagley was a member of the 105th military police company which deployed to Iraq in 2003. For some reason -- he didn't want to go. The indictment accuses Eagley of forging his chief's signature on the police department's letterhead to say he was needed as a police officer in Clifton Springs. Tantillo: Evidence indicates that he did approach the chief of police in Clifton Springs in 2003 askingfor a hardship letter to avoid beingdeployed to Iraq. His chief refused toprovide that letter to him andtold him 'you signed up for this job,now do you duty and your job here will be waiting for you upon your return.' Scott Upchurch is chief of the tiny village police department. Levato: Do you feel let down in any way? Scott Upchurch, Clifton Springs Police Chief: I won't answer questions. The only statement I can make publicly is that Steven EagleyJr. worked for our office from March 25th, 2002 until February 26th, 2013. I asked the chief about Eagley's work as a police officer. Chief: I did enjoy working with Steven Eagley Jr. while he wasemployed here, yes. We sampled public opinion at the Talk of the Town Restaurant. Levato: Has this been the talkof the town? Restaurant Owner: This has been the talk of the town.J.R. Lincoln, Talk of the Town Restaurant: Small town. Everybody knows everybody. Everyone's in everybody's business. Kathy Gutberle: I was shocked really. I didn't think he would ever do anything like that. Woman: I just can't believe hewould do that and think that you couldget away with it. investigators say steven eagley is charged with defrauding hisinsurance company for $12-thousand in rentliving expenses they didn't incur because they were actually staying with relatives. his wife melissa has been removed as a teacher in the phelps-clifton springs school district and wasre-assigned. they now live in palmyra. we knocked on their door this afternoon but there was no answer. ray -- do we know more about eagley's military service? i confirmed today that steven eagley joined the us army in 1995 and served on active duty until 2000 when he transferred to the national guard. he was a member ofthe 105th military police company and was discharged in may of 2003.his unit was the first new york m.p. unit deployed to iraq and was the last to return in 2011 after a seconddeployment. they suffered two casualties in 2003 including 29-year-old sgt. heath mcmillan -- who graduated from</media:text>

<media:text>it was ten years ago tonight the united states invaded iraq. to this day, the country remains split on whether we should have been there in the first place. and some local veterans think the whole war was a mistake. wetm 18 news reporter sam smink explains. ++++++++++ ++++ (+++sam+++) jeff --- one point five million americans would serve. more than 4 thousand men and 110 women soldiers dead, including several twin tiers heroes. > those following the actions locally, were told the same as the nation ... that it would be a quick war. that we would be finding and stopping weapons of mass destruction .. and that we would be greeted as liberators. that didn't turn out to be the case. and now a decade later, in the latest nbc poll, a clear majority of americans say the iraq war was not worth it. local veterans feel the same. ++++++++++ ++++ &lt;"There was a very wise person who said once, you learn by your mistakes or history repeats itself. And unfortunately, our country doesn't believe in that. We got ourselves in a mess in Vietnam, and all I see is the same in Iraq."> &lt;"I look back and I see then vs now and the Iraq War and Afghanistan. And I see the same thing happening over again."> ++++++++++ ++++ so what did the us accomplish in iraq? saddam hussein was removed from power. free elections were held. and hundreds, maybe thousands, of al-qaeda inspired militants were killed.. but the war also created thousands more. reporting live in the satellite center, sam smink</media:text>

<media:text>Even though it's been 10 years since the fighting started, the effects of the iraq war are still felt everyday by scores of families here in kern county. 17's rachelle murcia met with some of them and asked, was it worth it? She joins us with their answers. There was a lot sacrificed. The people i spoke with who made those sacrifices tell m yes, the war was worth it. While others, who aren't sure, say it's still too early to tell if any of the good we did in iraq will stick-- and to determine the bad it might have done to our service members. We will meet that threat now. While former president george w. Bush was announcing the u-s invasion in iraq a decade ago... 1:15 for me it was worth every second i was there. Iraq war veteran wesley barrientos was there that first day. 3:15 for me it's that i saw potential in that place i saw that put too much work into that place and i that place fall. Wesley was one o the 800 americans who lost limbs in the war. And clay farr was one of 20 service members with ties to kern county to lose his life in operation iraqi freedom-- killed in a roadside bomb. Explosion his dad, patrick, says he thinks about his son everyday... But on this 10th anniversary, he has no r i couldn't have any animosity towards any policy the us government has th to be in the war whether it was right or wrong. Clay believed it was righ right and that's the way i live out the rest of my life. While no atomic weapons were found, saddam hussien was removed from power. Celebration 1:32:23 just the thought of a an we gave them that freedom. 2:25 i think we have to always defend what we know is right. But others here argue iraqi's freedoms are limited... And it's only a matter of time before evil will reign supreme. 1:03 all t kick back and rest for a year or 2 the united states moved out they go back in and take charge again. 3:52 do you think we should have gone into iraq at all? No. B i'm not a politician i sit back like a lot of people and i'm hoping our country does the right thing by us. County veteran's service director, dick taylor, says many iraq veterans... 1:19 the numbers are staggering now suffer from traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder. And he believes only time will tell if what the allied troops accompshed in iraq... Will outweigh the lasting effects. 3:07 sometimes it takes a long long time for the analysis of what and world war ii and korea as to whet or not. Taylor couldn't give me the exact tramatic brain or p- numbers due to privacy laws. But as you heard, there are clearly two views on this war. I'm rachelle murcia 17 news.</media:text>

<media:text>clears. >>> it's a milesne in a bloody military conflict. it was exactly ten years ago today that u.s.-led invasions started in the war in iraq. today some local soldiers reflected on the war. here's abc 6 news reporter dan conradt. >> one of the big things was the culture shock. the way they go about day-to-day life. the way they view life. >>Reporter: HANS HAS SERVED in the military in iraq, kosovo and afghanistan and he's willing to go back. >> if i was back in the guard, which i'm working on and they asked me to go, i would go. >> 50% of our military is guard and reserve. >>Reporter: A MILITARY FORCE made up largely of citizen soldiers, led to creation of programs to help them return to whatever comes next. >> because adjustment from military life to civilian life is very difficult. >> the state became a big national role model with how they treated the soldiers. >> we need a lot more psychological training when they make their adjustments. those are some of the things that we've learned. >> giving enough information about what we can do if we're struggling with alcoholism or gambling or post traumatic stress or something like that. >> and that we do have a lot more people with long-term injuries. >>Reporter: A RECENT POLL found that 53% of americans now believe the wars a a mistake. but they overwhelmingly support the soldiers. >> so the fact that iraq is in a place, as difficult as the challenges remain, where it has the potential for a better future, due in no small measure to the sacrifice and service of american men and women. >> we have to realize peopleare paid with their lives and time and effort. >>Reporter: DAN CONRADT, ABC 6 news. >> nearly 4500 american soldiers have died in iraq in the past ten years. >>> and we want to remind you that abc 6 news has gathered a lot of resources for our veterans, their families and the community. for the latest stories, jobs or events, you can look on our web site under the support our heroes link. you'll find it at kaaltv.com.</media:text>

<media:text>it's over now, but we still honor the service - and sacrifice - of the troops who fought there. kimt news three's annie szatkowski is catching up with a national guard member ... to get his thoughts on his time spent in iraq.xxx 10 year iraq war anniversary-pkg-2 national guard member, dan fehr carries a lot of memories from his service in iraq, but there's one thing he'll always remember. "the thing that everyone talks about it the heat, the dust, the rain..." to this day, dan still cannot believe how quickly time has passed since his first deployment. "kinda surprised it's been that long, and really it doesnt seem like it because the unit here we''ve deployed twice since the whole 9/11 event." dan was in charge of driving supplies and equipment while in iraq. and after two deployments, totally about 2 years ... he says coming home can be hard. " you're home, and you're not with the same people 24/7 day in and day out, very rigid life, you're not under the stress and it's an adjustment some can adjust real quick, some can't" it's something a lot of soldiers have to face, especially when it comes to brain injuries. a local veteran advocate group says they've seen those difficulties first-hand "we see a lot of memory loss, we see irritability, we see frustration because they forget things." "the war in iraq has left over 4,000 americans killed and over 32,000 wounded, but fava officials say those numbers don't account for what they call "invisible wounds." " traumatic brain injury, ptsd and chronic pain, our vets from this war are coming back with 12-14 injuries on average." dan says that most soldiers go through some form of ptsd... for him, it's doesn't affect his day to day life, but there are triggers that bring back memories. "july fourth is really bad, fireworks, i think it's from living at bhagdad with all the mortars, the sounds, the impact, the explosions..it's a natural reactions, you still catch yourself." and while the war in iraq may be finished... soldiers who remain overseas, no matter what the duty, will continue to fight for their country. we're still doing what we're told asked, ordered...that's all we can do." annie szatkowski, kimt news three. / fava officials say the veterans from the iraq war tend to be on the younger side... they assist those soldiers with job placements, resume writing and interview skills. / live</media:text>
