changed the spots with the movie. >> tough changeover star trek into the darkness. comes on the today. what can we expect? >> so it has a lot of the same feel as the first movies. but a lot of the secondary characters play a bit more -- on screen more. which i really love. because the interplay between the team is hilarious. believable and entertaining. and gives nod to say the fans of the show. and makes it contemporary. and let's see. we have a new comer. so bad guy right there. he plays bad guy. benedict. he was in war horse with steven spielberg. spielberg is the one that referred him to abrams. but he was posted to do the role and he declined due to monetary issues. so he wanted more money. i don't know. >> he is the best. i am bumd. >> so good. >> such a good bad guy. >> you know, he is so good in this movie. menacing. and he is just as deadly with his mind as with a bomb. he really has great presence. we saw zach re, playing spock. perfect as spock. i feel like he gets him dead on. that struggle between the interplay of human and bullkin. he is great. and zooey, of course is on it. >> what does she do? >> she is great. couple of funny scenes with spock where they are fighting and having relationshipssues like everybody does. which is funny. and chris pine. the whole movie is great. ensemble piece but he is the star of the movie. he captivates the whole movie. so charm i can. first one at 28. and youngest male -- youngest lead to ever do star trek at 28 years old. he takes the scene. >> what is it about him? that interview last night. i don't know if i thought he was that attractive before -- >> i think he started to do the spanish. >> i don't know. >> he is amazing. movie is in 3d. do you see like 3-d? >> depends on the movie. >> some people don't. it makes them sick. paramount originally wanted abrams to shoot it in 3d. jj wanted to shoot it two dimensionally. and compromised. and shot it in imax and converted it to 3-d. first time ever done that. in cinema history. >> how did it go? >> i thought it was great. i saw it in 3d. i loved it. action sequence is smooth. polished. and fun. but the 3-d. it was awesome. amazing they can do that. >> will this take over for ironman this weekend do you think? >> oh, my gosh. definitely. i think -- tony and i both saw it. gave it an a. blockbuster summer hits. it is an a. if you love the first "when star trek next generation started out that was like my kid geek world just exploded into awesomeness." to be fair - these folks are promoting the phoenix festival coming up next weekend. but that doesn't mean they don' )t love the movies and shows. "i kind of grew up watching the journey home a million times like over and over and i though that was the only star trek thing that was ever on." they've even taken it up to the point where they dress the part. they look at like football fans wearing their favorite jerseys. The Wachowski siblings from the "matrix" trilogy team up with Tom Tykver from "Run Lola Run" to share all the writing and directing duties. Based on David Mitchell's sprawling novel, the movie basically tells about half a dozen stories spanning different worlds and time periods. No time to detail all of them here, but each story is good enough to work as its own movie, and "cloud Atlas" hop-scotches between them with some excellent editing. The ensemble cast includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent and Hugh Grant, and they all play characters in each of the stories with some terrific make-up that was somehow ignored by the Oscars. "Cloud Atlas" doesn't tie all the stories together with neat little bows like, say, Crash, but there are over- arching themes. If nothing else, it's impeccably acted and the different worlds we visit are totally absorbing. Just let this thing work you over. Unfortunately, the blu-ray doesn't have a lot of extras - just seven short features totalling less than an hour. For such an impressive epic, I want more. But it's not all brainy artsy stuff out this week. Texas Chainsaw comes in a 3D Blu ray pack. And finally... Fraggle Rock is 30 years old, and the entire series is being released in a set with loads of special features. Scott Fitzgerald novel is one of the year's best so far. http://www.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/5703/4054852?cpt=8&wpid=0 KJTV FOX 34 Lubbock, TX it adds another 72 and a half million dollars to its massive total. that was expected. the surprise is how well "the great gatsby" performed... opening way above expectations with 51 million dollars. back on cam when plans were announced for a fifth movie version of f. scott fitzgerald's classic 1925 novel to be filmed in 3d and featuring jay z music, no one could be blamed for being skeptical or rolling their eyes. but when you see director baz luhrmann's vision play out on screen, it actually fits the novel like one of gatsby's finely tailored suits. .10 He's right - and you can re-invent it. That's what's happening with "The Great Gatsby," which was a novel about bathing in gross extravagance and excess, so why shouldn't the movie be made the same way? And who better than Aussie director Luhrmann to do i He's the director of the gaudy "Moulin Rouge" and flashy "Romeo and Juliet." He cast his Romeo as the title character. nats- Leonardo DiCaprio is fantastic as the mysterious Jay Gatsby - a man hiding secrets who made himself rich to win back a long-lost love, Daisy Buchanan, played by the radiant Carey Muligan. nats Toby Maguire is Daisy's cousin, Nick Caraway, the narrator of the story and an outsider to all of the parties and drunken debauchery of the uber rich lifestyle. He's also Gatsby's best route to Daisy. nats Problem is, Daisy went on and married an old money scoundrel named Tom, played by an outstanding Joel Edgerton. nats DiCaprio's Gatsby can be viewed in so many ways - a lovesick romantic, a delusional liar, a conniving and selfish elitist - maybe all of the above. But he's endearing in a way previous versions of the character haven't been. Likewise, Luhrmann's lush and immensely entertaining version breathes fresh life into this story that's faded over time simply intro required high school reading. It's close enough to the book that some students could probably cheat and watch the movie and do okay on the test - um, not that they should. Some have complained the movie looks so beautiful and perfect that it feels fake and empty. And they're right - but that's the point of the whole story, old sport. LEONARDO DiCAPRIO, JOE eggerton. it's okay. the problem is with the book. because the book is kind of a big massive depressing look at love lost and all of that. the cast in this is really great. the acting is great. but i think it's such a big piece of meat to chew that that's what audiences are going to come away. it's almost too much. >> the back end. >> beautifully shot film. great job in putting it all together. the sets, the costumes are amazing. go see it for that. but you will walk out going, i just read a book. >> how long. >> it's two hours-ish. >> HOW IS LEONARDO DiCAPRIO? >> great. you will hear his name during oscar time. >> this is his role. this is the kind of thing he likes to do. >> of course, if you know the book, you kind of know how it's going to be. this is one of those movies that take the book to heart but because the book is so long, they have had to cut corners and do some things. the narration is a bit custom cumbersome. go see it but with that caveat, you will working hard. >> can i take my husband or go with brianne. >> go with brianne? >> i will give it a solid b but LEONARDO DiCAPRIO'S performance, that gets an a. great as gatsby. >> let's move on to movie myths. >> first myth is amnesia. we see this -- i saw this the other nighe night in a show that somebody had amnesia. this is when you forget everything. it doesn't work like that. there was a study that was done and it said that people who suffer from amnesia will remember everything up until they got hit on the head or the accident and not have good memory after that. so what hollywood is spin that. you will not remember anything up until the accident and so that's -- >> there's a lot of names do that. >> there's a lot of films. momento, the guy forgetting. 51st dates. >> drew berrymore. >> and rachel mcadams. >> it is a silly hollywood myth. second myth, do you remember star wars, how exciting it was at the very end of the first one where the death star exploded in space and you had all that fire. space is a vacuum. sound carry in a vacuum. you won't hear an explosion. >> that's a boring movie. >> you don't have to worry about me questioning that. i would let that. >> star wars, yeah, what's wrong? >> you can have fire in space but it won't last very long, there's no oxygen. >> getting knocked out. >> getting knocked out. this is something you see in almost every detective. somebody pistol whips somebody shall getting knocked out. if you're ever knocked out from blunt trauma force like that, you are thyou are not going to wake up and shake it off. >> when they are strangling someone, within ten seconds that person is dead. is that really how it works? >> that doesn't work either that way because, of course, it takes a lot to kill somebody. >> the movie o only has an hour and a half, you guys. >> it doesn't have that kind of time. >> what's next. >> tracing a call. >> ever since about 1985, tracing a call, that's the big point. hey, trace that call, we will nd out where the killer is. you trace calls right now when they come in, you have a caller i.d. it is not that difficult to trace a call. in fact, it's done right now with today's technology for you. they can't even disguise where a call is coming from anymore. that plot point is a lie. >> with brie brianne's phone has the place they are, their hairstyle. >> bullet proof vest. >> it doesn't deflect bullets. what it does is take the shock of the bullet hitting you and displace it. you can still die wearing a bullet proof vest. you won't die from a bullet going through you. you will die from blunt trauma force. >> people who wear bullet proof vests and go through it, it displaces the bullet. they are racked with bruises. >> you have seen too many movies with the rock in them. >> i thought that's what it was. just, poof, no big deal. >> a little bit of science. >> silencers. >> silencers don't exist really at all. they are call suppressors. it knocks down the decibel of a gun about 4 to 14 db. you are only taking --l the volume is on 15, you are turning it down to 13. >> not completely silent. >> it is not sigh leapt. silent. you can't have target practice in a library. when it is boof boof boof, it is not going to work. >> it's like putting hand over a baby while it is crying, it is still loud. >> talking pictures, saturdays 12:30 and sundays right here at This Monday, May 13 at 5:30p.m., the Art Mission and Theater is holding an event, "The Show Must Go On" It's a fundraiser so that Binghamton's only independent movie theater can remain. The Art Mission and Theater has a goal of $4,500. At the event, will be hors d'oeuvres, drinks at a cash bar, music and prizes. It will be held at Remlik's Grille and Oyster Bar at 31 Lewis St in Binghamton. The cost of the event is $25 a person. Tickets can be purchased in advance. maybe they were furloughed by the sequester. or maybe they just know - he's got this. .01 .16 In the movies, it's never been the suit that makes Iron Man soar - it's the maetically wise- cracking charm of Robert Downey, Jr. And this third "Iron Man" movie has a writer and director who knows how to use Downey well and play to his strengths. Shane Black wrote and directed the outstanding and little- seen action comedy "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which featured Downey in one of his first come-back roles in 2005. nats Giving Black the reigns for "Iron Man 3" was a great move. He takes some big risks with the characters, and he's smart enough to keep the focus on Downey's Tony Stark, unlike "Iron Man 2," which was bloated with side stories. Haunted by the events of "The Avengers," Stark is forced back into action by a terrorist called The Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley. nats His taunting has quick consequences, when his posh home is attacked in a spectacular action sequence. nats Stark soon finds himself all alone without the power of his suit. This is when the movie is at its best with Stark having to rely on his brain rather than the metal brawn. Black's dialogue is quick and punchy. He's also a capable action director, evidenced in this thrilling skydiving scene that dazzles in 3d. nats The plot has a few chinks in the armor and there's no mistaking this is a Disney movie. But Black also supplies more than a few surprising twists, which work really well, and give this "Iron Man" some irony, even though comics fans may howl in anger. Guy Pearce is solid as a scientist with secrets, and thankfully Gwenyth Paltrow gets more to do this time as Pepper Pots. But in the end, it comes down to Downey.
