tonight his ex- wife sits behind bars, accused of shooting and killing snyder, then burying him in their yard. tonight misa maruyama joins us live from apd headquarters with how a confession from the suspect's son helped police close the case. police say the crime weighed on snyder's step- son's conscience for eight years -- and he finally came clean ... givingolice the information they needed to put his mother behind bars. this is our first look at ellen c- de-baca--- the woman accused of shooting her ex- husband eight times ... before having her step son he her bury michael snyder here-- at their former northeast heights home. police say c-de- baca's son ... michael sheffield .. confided in a high school friend about the killing ...saying his mother forced him to help cover up the crime. two of sheffield's friends shared the information with police less than two weeks ago. this is a very sad case. the fact that it has taken eight years to bring closure. obviously this has been very tough on michael, and the reason why this whole thing came to fruition is becae he had told some of his friends what had happened , obviously that was bothering him. all along -- c-de-baca had told police snyder had walked out on the family ... after they had an argument at a phoenix restaurant in 2002. she even told her son's friend that snyder had a gay lover. but armed with new information -- police approached sheffield at his work last friday. sheffield admitted to police he heard gunshots on january 11th 2002. he says he tried calling 9-1-1 ... but he hung up after his mother told him everything was o-k. he told policee and his mother panicked-- wrapped snyder's body in garbage bags and left his body in the garage for two days. he told investigators his mother rented a backhoe, dug a hole, and dumped the body. police say he won't face charges for the killing. at this point, the district attorney's office will make that final decision but because of his cooperation and due to the fact that he is a minor at the time of the offense, at this point in time there are no charges filed against him. sheffield was 17 at the time of the murder. police say c-de- baca borrowed the gun from an acquaintance and returned it months later. investigators say that person turned the gun in to police. c de baca faces murder charges and is being held at m-d-c on a million dollar bond. we're also learning more about michael snyder's life tonight. antoinette antonio spoke to a former co-worker about the well respected mechanic-- and continues our team coverage. a six figure salary working as a master mechanic-- a gated nort albuquerque acres home on nearly an acre of land. and a daughter who was six years old when he vanished. police had always thought michael snyder's disappearance was unusual -- but as we now know, the 43 year old didn't leave on his own. "i was just surprised that anyone would want to hurt him, like i can't believe it really." danny dominguez worked with snyder in the late 90's -- as a mechanic at a westside jeep dealer. he says snyder was highly trained and certified -- giving him that master mechanic title. he was also dedicated to his job. "he was a very good mechanic who was there when i arrived in the morning and there when i left at night." dominguez says while snyder mostly kept to himself... he was always willing to help out his co- workers. a friendly guy by all accounts -- who didn't seem to show any problems... at least on the outside. but according to the missing person report snyder's mother filed-- five months after he was last seen -- snyder suffered from multiple sclerosis... and was having marital problems causing depression. "he was a super nice guy and i can't imagine why anyone would want to hurt him and my heart and prayers go out to his family." according to that missing person report -- snyder's mother and sister suspected foul play from the very beginning

City officials are keeping a close eye on a man cited in a weekend rave bust where officers found hundreds of people packed inside a northeast Albuquerque warehouse. City officials say the warehouse near Candelaria and Carlisle didn't have proper lighting inside, specifically for the emergency exits. Of the seven hundred people that were crammed inside the warehouse, none of the party-goers were cited Saturday night, but officials say 26-year-old Chris Myers created a potentially dangerous situation had there been a fire or some other type of emergency. The city’s public safety spokesman added, "They will be monitoring Mr. Myers for the next several months to make sure that he is properly following the law whenever he decides to have gatherings this large." Under Albuquerque’s city ordinance, one must have a permit for any type of gathering of 50 or more people.

police say now that they know who killed prominent albuquerque mechanic michael snyder -- now they're trying to figure out why. last night snyder's ex-wife ... ellen snyder ... turned herself into police. misa maruyama is here with the latest on the investigation into a motive. misa? ellen snyder sits behind bars facing murder charges. albuquerque police say they're trying to find out if she killed ex- husband michael snyder-- then was it for money -- or for another reason. ellen snyder faced a judge for the first time today. she's accused of shooting and killing ex-husband michael snyder, then hiding his body 6 feet underground where they used to live. police say now they're trying to find out why she did it. they are looking into whether ellen and michael snyder had a pre-nuptial agreement. ellen filed for divorce four months after snyder was last seen. she later re-married -- and went by the last name c-de-baca. we will definitely look into that to find out if the motive for the homicide was money. according to new mexico law -- divorcing couples split property acquired during marriage fifty- fifty. but a pre-nup could change that arrangement. we will look into the financial status of mr. snyder and mr. snyder at the time the homicide occurred. police say ellen borrowed a loaded gun from a friend -- and told him she was worried her then husband would hurt her or her kids. then she reportedly returned it empty months later. police say they had no reported history of domestic violence. at the end of the day, we will never know. only ms. snyder will know why she harmed mr. snyder so whatever motives could be -- whether they be money- related, related to their child and custodial issue or there was a third party involved -- we will probably never know. only ms.snyder will know. we went to step-son michael sheffields workplace to learn more. a co-worker at the albuquerque saab dealership says sheffield worked there for about six years. he says he was a good guy, a great technician .. and mostly kept to himself. it's up to the d-a whether he will face charges. we now know more about the life michael snyder led before he vanished. he was bringing home a six figure salary as a master mechanic for a local car dealer. he owned a gated north albuquerque acres home on nearly one acre of land -- where his remains were discovered this week. one of snyder's former co- workers says he was highly trained as a mechanic -- and very dedicated to his job. according to the missing person report snyder's mother filed-- snyder suffered from multiple sclerosis... and was having marital problems--- causing depression. that same report states snyder's mother and sister suspected foul play from the very beginning. keep it tuned to

investigators have left the scene -- but we did get an update from police within the hour -- and they hope they've gathered enough evidence from this scene to possibly make an arrest by the end of the day tomorrow. investigators were sifting through the dirt outside this home on the 11- thousand block of anaheim -- until about 7 tonight. that's when medical investigators removed what are believed to be remains found 6 feet underground -- next to the home's garage. police originally thought the remains of were right under the garage -- after getting a tip from a confidential informant that michael snyder, who once lived at the home, was buried there. but today they realized they were dging in the wrong spot. soon after moving the search -- investigators discovered a tarp with what police think are the remains of snyder inside. the office of the medical investigator is now working to make a positive identification. as far as the suspect -- or suspects -- police are still keeping quiet on who that is. 48:41 we're waiting for the office of the medical investigator to give us their conclusions and with the witnesses and the physical evidence we have, we are hoping to make an arrest very soon. police say snyder was last seen leaving a phoenix restaurant in 2002 after getting into a fight with his wife ellen. she filed for divorce 4 months after he disappeared. police learned about snyder's disappearance a month after that. once again... police aren't naming a suspect, but they're hoping to make an arrest very soon. possibly sometime tomorrow

the woman accused of stealing more than three million dollars from a small new mexico school district stands before a judge today. but it's not for her criminal case. our jeremy jojola was the only t-v reporter in the courtroom today and confronted kathy borrego about the allegations. jeremy. she's accused of stealing more than three million dollars from a small school district... she's facing criminal charges---as well as a civil lawsuit. for the first time since she was fired in june, we saw kathy borrego stand before a judge. kathy borrego, former business manager, in court today for the lawsuit against her ..... the jemez mountain school district is suing her -- her daughter -- and her husband for the theft of 3.3 million dollars from the district during a seven year period. it was said in court today borrego wrote more than 530 district checks to herself and others including her husband and daughter. today the judge would not freeze the borrego family's assets because there's still no proof of where exactly all that money went. outside borrego wouldn't answer any questions. jojola: "mrs. borrego, any comments about the allegations against you?" "do you have anything to say to the communities of gallina, lindrith or la jara....do you admit or deny the allegations against you? "do you have anything to say?" her husband, jerry archulta, who is also being sued, wouldn't say anything. either. jojola: do you have any comments? "no comment? the district is suing borrego and her family members, hoping to get three times the amount taken, which would amount to around 10 million. kathy borrego, for now is the only one facing charges in a criminal case. borrego is charged with eleven counts of embezzlement and tax evasion. she has been ordered to remain on house arrest while her criminal case moves through the system

what's a high school basketball game -- without parents or fans to cheer on the players? that's exactly what's happening right now at a game between los lunas and rio grande -- after the new mexico activities association banned fans -- because of bad blood between the two schools. kayla anderson is live at rio grande high school with reaction. that decision was the result of growing intensity between the two teams over the past three years... but the n-m-a-a decided to step in -- after an incident last month between the players -- and fans storming the court. no matter which team they were rooting for-- students we talked with disagree with the decision by the new mexico athletics association. "i think that's kind of uncool, like we can't go help cheer our teams." "i think it's kind of stupid because at least the school fans and all that should be able to go you know?" "i think that it's wrong, because say if i wanted to go to the basketball game, i'd like to support my school, i'd like to cheer them on." "i think they should let us in because it is our school and we need to support our basketball teams." this week the nmaa announced that nobody except staff players and the media would be allowed inside the gym during the game. "intensity in the games have gotten to a point where it actually resulted in an altercation between two athletes on january 19th in los lunas." while the two teams aren't one of the state's biggest high school rivals-- the nmaa says the situation between them got out of hand-- and it's their job to intervene. "the decision was made to get people's attention that the behavior that occurred in the game in los lunas cannot be tolerated. and therefore we have to make a decision that will hopefully serve as a learning experience for the parents and the kids." the n-m-a-a says this is an isolated incident-- and most students are doing what they're supposed to do-- playing fairly doing the sports they love.

53-year-old paul salazar was fired by the city in 2007 for not telling his boss about a child molestation charge. the charge was eventually dropped as part of a plea deal. and salazar never gave up fighting to proclaim his innocence -- and to get back behind the wheel of a-b-q ride. paul salazar, who in 2007, served 18 months of probation for criminal sexual contact of a minor, now has his job back as a city bus driver. his attorney says he officially starts work again next week. salazar pled no contest to the charge - served his probation, and as part of the plea deal -- did not have to register as a sex offender -- meaning he could still drive a city bus. but his then- boss, greg payne, fired him -- because he says salazar did not inform him about the charge -- something required by city law. salazar appealed his termination to the city personnel board -- who determined that salazar should not have been fired. former mayor martin chavez appealed that ruling to district court. a judge then sent the case back to the personnel board who for a second time, ordered the city to re-hire salazar. payne says not only did mayor richard berry re- hire him, but also is forced to pay salazar two years of back-pay "i think the personnel board is absolutely crazy to say we need to bring this individual back, put him behind the wheel of a bus and give him 100- thousand dollars, that's nuts" city c-a-o david campbell says by law - based on the personnel board's findings, the city had no choice but to re-hire salazar and pay him any lost wages. payne says considering salazar's case, if mayor berry was forced to re-hire him - he should have given him a position where he's not around children. but campbell says having salazar continue his previous job was the best choice "we looked to a number of positions where he might be reinstated, but the most appropriate one for him to be reinstated to was the one he did an excellent job at which was being a bus driver" payne says a district court judge never made a ruling on the case, and says mayor berry could have appealed the personnel board's ruling - taking it back to court. but campbell says by the time berry took office, the statute of limitations for filing any appeal on the case had already expired.

tonight investigate reporter jeremy jojola looks into a district that still allows corporal punishment--includ ing spanking---and one case where a parent says the paddler went overboard....to the point where state police are now involved. he's a 14 year old boy whose mother admits has problems paying attention in class. but his mother who we will call brandy says her 90-pound son didn't deserve what she calls excessive spanking at school, resulting in a bruised behind, last fall. he was paddled at san jon school near tucumcari. "i think it caused more damage to his behavior." brandy was out of town that day but was sent photos of her sons purple behind by his grandmother. now these photos are part of a state police report. "and when i got the pictures, i was devestated." "jojola: what went through your mind when you saw those pictures?" "i was sick, i was hurt it could be taken this far...i was very very upset." she claims her family was told the female principal would swat her son when they gave permission. instead the report says it was the coach who swatted the boy three times while allegedly telling the student "if he was tough enough to talk back to teachers, then he was tough enough to take the swats." because of the bruising and because her son cried after the first swat, the investigating officer concluded in his report the paddling "could have been excessive" but also noted it did not effect his mobility, and that permission for the swatting was granted by the boy's family. the investigator also noted names of students on the paddle, saying it was his impression the school takes pride in spanking. brandy says the paddling did more damage than just bruising. "i think his self confidence is like zero. he's stressed a lot. he really doesn't want to go to school." we asked the san jon superintendent about the case.. "it's confidential information..." while garay salazar says he can't comment by law on any student's punishment---he did talk about the district's paddling policy in general, saying corporal punishment is rarely used, and only as a last resort that is usually requested by parents. "from your perspective, do you think it works?" "you know, having been in education for almost 20 years, it's one of those things i think over time has lost some of its effectiveness, but it does work for some kids. it is an option." our state is one of 20 across the country where school corporal punishment is still legal... including spanking. out of new mexico's 89 school districts, we found 36 districts that still allow corporal punishment, like in san jon. the law leaves it up to local school boards to decide if it should be used. "a lot of times, it's a reflection of the community itself. the board members of course represent the community and i'm sure if they felt like the policy was something the community did not want, then we would probably make that adjustment." in one school year, we found 705 students in new mexico were swatted, according to the u.s. dapartment of education. "we are teaching children that you solve problems through violence." ohio is the latest state to ban it after nadine block of the center for effective discipline pushed for the ban. she told us over a satellite interview, it should be banned in new mexico too, because corporal punishment is already banned in the military, foster care, and in private child care. block also says it opens up schools for lawsuits. "one of the primary problems is that children are injured." "brandy" has put her son in another school and has been told by the district attorneys office it likely will not move forward with the case. so now brandy says she may sue.

A bomb blast in Pakistan claimed by the Taliban killed eight people Wednesday, including three US soldiers and children at the opening of a school just rebuilt after an Islamist attack. The US soldiers, who the embassy said were training paramilitary troops, were travelling in a convoy with local troops, journalists and officials to the opening of the girls' school when the roadside bomb exploded. An emotional day in court as friends and family of a Roswell woman confront her killer. Before he was sentenced, Alan Dale Bruce addressed the courtroom: "I am deeply sorry and give my most heartfelt apologies and say that I am so, so sorry for my actions and the loss and hurt it has caused...The regret I have taken Ms. Tidwell's life." Leatha Tidwell's dismembered body was found in the back of her truck last March, after police in Texas arrested Bruce for a parole violation. Bruce had been living with Tidwell and doing odd jobs until he killed her after an argument about money. He later pleaded no contest to the charges, which included dismembering her body with an ax. Bruce was sentenced to the maximum of 49 ½ years. Tidwell's friends are relieved, but say their work isn't over and continue to push for an anti-mutilation law. Bruce will head back to Texas to finish up a sentence for other crimes before beginning his nearly 50 year sentence here in New Mexico.
