Last week Tuesday .. TheHawaiian Humane Society rescued 43 pomeranians from a home in Halawa .. after the breeder surrendered the dogs. The Humane Society reached out to the public .. and there was an overwhelming response. surrendered the dogs. The Humane Society reached out tothe public .. and there was an overwhelming response.More than 200 people showed up on Thursday to enter their namesin a lottery to adopt one of 11 dogs.And on Friday .. 13 pomeranians went up for adoption. 500people showed up ... hoping to win the lottery. Mara Baker of Waiki was one of them. MARA - we saw it on the news and thought oh they're cute puppies and she always wanted a fluffy puppy and because it was an award for her for having perfect attendance, I thought ok we'll go try. Well, Mara and hergranddaughter Jazmel ended up with a winning ticket ..and this is the dog they picked .. a 9-year-old female pomeranian .. which they named Tiger. I got the name because of mckinley high school tigers. But once they left the Humane Society .. Mara says she noticed Tiger seemed sick. he started sneezing then water coming out of the nose and eyes.And that was just the start of it. my heart was to take care of her no matter what and then on monday we were going to take her to a vet on monday.but we never made it to monday. On Sunday, she says Tiger seemed to be getting worse .. And since she didn't know of a veterinarian who was open .. She and Jazmel took Tiger back to the Humane Society. she just fell to the ground and had like a seizure and foam coming out of his mouth. and I said can I leave em here or find a vet first, what are myoptions, and they said it's my responsibility I gotta take the dog from them now, if not I have to surrender it back to them. So she gave Tiger up. it was at the spur of the moment an emergency situation. I didn't want to prolong it because I didn't know the condition of the dog. TheHumane Society says Tiger is now in foster care .. Along with 19 other rescued pomeranians that are being monitored for various reasons including their health. you have to go in knowing thatit might have problems that are going to bechallenging. It probably is going to have it that's why they're being taken away. when I adopted the dog I didn't know that within 24-48 hours I couldn't bring the dog back to have it checked. Mara says she's learned a lot from the whole experience .. monkeys...they' re the little one's frequently seen in images with organ grinders. over the weekend a baby capuchin was on the loose in the clermont county. it took place in the community of neville. after attempts to capture it failed, authorities made a decision to shoot and kill it. local 12's rich jaffe says that decision struck a very emotional note with animal lovers. normally exotic animals in the state of ohio are regulated by the department of agriculture but the department of agriculture doesn't have a law enforcement arm. so saturday when the capuchin monkey was on the loose here in neville a call was made to the division of wildlife and the local game warden responded. the monkey looked like a smaller version of this one. not much bigger than a large squirrel. a local woman teresa bullock who owns monkeys and is considered an expert by some people was also called. she talked that evening with yvette riley. so she grabbed baby toys, things that monkeys like, baby bottle and down she went. she says yvette it was chatting back and forth to me it was coming down the tree was halfway down the tree and then in steps the wildlife person...and just takes over... according to state officials two wildlife officers and sheriff's deputies were on the scene from early morning into the afternoon. the monkey ran from tree to tree, as officers contacted their supervisors in columbusnd discussed the situation. after canvassing the neighborhood and not finding an owner, officials eventually determined the threat of the monkey escaping outweighed the possibility of capture. they shot it and it was screaming and it was all just pitiful this little baby monkey and she said it wasn't some gorilla or an ape. nats david stricker's a clermont county veterinarian who specializes in exotic animals. among other creatures, he treats a lot of monkeys. they have their place but i don't recommend monkeys for everyone. it's like having a special needs child for 30 years. stricker says the baby capuchin posed no serious threat. they're really not dangerous, but you could get into if you try to catch it they're gonna bite. just like if you try to catch a raccoon it's gonna bite. you try a opossum it might bite. wildlife officials stress this was a public safety issue...but not everyone agrees. i think it could have been handled a lot different especially in this situation. in neville rich jaffe, local 12 news. teresa bullock tells us she offered the use of a tranquilzer gun to the wildlife officers, however wildlife officials tell us they're not trained in Brenda Wilbanks: Founder of Haven Animal Care Shelter - "I believe the problem is getting worse with the over population." animal control officer ... rohonda marett says as the city expands...those stray numbers are getting more difficult to manage. it's a large city...and there are a lot of calls. Rhonda Marett: Animal Control Officer - "we do have our officers responding to stray animals running at large in the neighborhoods, on a daily basis." STAND UP - "there's no shortage of cats and dogs coming into Lubbock shelters on a daily basis. Animal services says the amount is managable based on the turnover for finding animals like this, homes." Marett - "i'm really happy with the way the adoptions have been going." despite steady adoptions ... councilman todd kline says such a large number of strays is dangerous. Todd Klein: Councilman, District 3 - "when it comes to animal services, first and foremost it's not to serve animals, it's to serve the community. We have disease transmission issues, rabies obviously. There's just a litany of reasons that you want to have vaccinated and contained animals." Marett - "for the safety of people out in the streets and also for the safety of the animal, I think it's very important that they keep a leash or keep them restrained in some way." that is responsible pet ownership. unfortunately... too many lubbock residents ... don't comply. Klein - "if you take an animal in, dog cat, whatever. Be a good steward.
