((even though he can't play he does show that he's still for the team and that makes us work even harder.)) before katherine braham died - it was her one wish to nominate her son for the high school rudy award. ((it was a true story about a young man who had a heart very courageous very committed.)) the award is based on football legend daniel rudy ruettiger . it doesn't go to the best player but rather - to the one with the biggest heart. the winner must display the four c's - character - courage - contribution and commitment. anthony's teachers - classmates and family are now doing all they can to get him as many votes as possible. ((it's just a very awesome story because of what it stands for it's courage commitment and it's what my nephew is all about.)) tricia cruz, news 4 america's slumping economy is</media:text>

<media:text>people who live in one part of hamilton county will head to the polls. on the ballot, a referendum for hamilton southeastern schools. dr. brian smith is the superintendent of hamilton southeastern schools. the school district is acting voterring -- acting voters to make up for a shortfall. >> the cost of a referendum would be $11 more per year than what they pay currently. that's a reasonable cost. >> the money would be used to republican with over-- with overcrowding in the schools. making sure the students have the tools they need to learn in school. this referendum fails, the district would have to make district cuts. >> with our referendum, we're going to be cutting 60 the teachers and more and programs that were growing by 800 students per year. >> robinson is also a parent with two children in an h.s.c. school. i think that's scary especially if your child is struggle and the teacher has a lot of kids that are struggling, she won't have much time to spend with them. >> this is not a good time for the school referendum. >> it's a great school district. i have great things to say about it. everybody has to watch their pennies and figure out what they're going to do long term. >> this is about children, great teachers and maintaining class sizes that allows us to keep the excellence that we have been able to establish over the past several years. >> daniel miller, 24 hour news 8. >> in the spring of this year, h.s.e.</media:text>

<media:text>down in madison this afternoon. governor jim doyle and milwaukee mayor tom barrett were on hand to greet the president. about one o'clock, his motorcade arrived at wright middle school. the president and education secretary arne duncan met with about 40 students before the speech. it's the president's second appearance in wisconsin since winning the election. the first was to green bay. the visit comes on the eve of wisconsin lawmakers voting on changing the state's education laws so it might qualify for federal money. but that money has strings attached. fox 11's laura smith has been covering the president' )s comments joins us from the news and content center with more. in coming weeks, states will be able to compete for a slice of a 4-1/2 billion dollar education grant under the race to the top program. it's president obama's plan to strengthen the nation' )s education system by putting students' interests first. we have balanced coverage. o: "it's time to make education america's national mission." before a crowd of 500 in madison, president barack obama unveiled "race to the top" - a grant program for states committed to transforming education. o: "if you develop a strong plan to improve the quality of education in your state, we' )ll offer you a grant to help make that plan a reality." before a state is even eligible to compete for federal dollars... it must remove any so-called firewall laws. o: it basically says that you can't factor in the performance of students when you're evaluating teachers. the president says a number of states have already taken up this challenge including wisconsin. he says the real competion will begin when states apply for the grants. the program is based on four key measures of reform. o:the first measure is whether a state is committed to setting higher standards and better assessments that prepare our children to succeed in the 21st century. the second is a state's committment to hiring effective teachers and principals. the third is whether states are tracking progress to make sure every child is ready for college and a career. the fourth is whether a state is focused on transforming low performing schools. "and these are the four challenges that our country must meet for our children to outcompete workers around the world, for our economy to grow and prosper, and for america to lead in the 21st century." the republican party of wisconsin says it agrees with accountability for schools, staff and students. however, it adds--throwing money at the problem instead of changing laws in madison won't fix anything. gop2: we have failing schools in wisconsin that need to be addrsed through competition, choice, merit, pay, student evaluations and yes even teacher discipline, meaning getting rid of bad teachers and rewarding the good ones. but that's the piece that the democrats in wisconsin refuse to take part in. the state assembly is expected to vote education legislation on thursday -- that includes allowing student testing to be used for teacher evaluations. > the republican national committee ran a new radio ad in the madison area today criticizing president obama. and just before his speech, about 100 protesters gathered outside the middle school.some pro calling on obama to end the war. one activist said most of those protesting had voted for obama in hopes he would change the direction of the wars in afghanistan and iraq. a couple dozen other demonstrators</media:text>

<media:text>to learning - by dividing some classes by gender. garrett middle school is nine weeks into this program. newschannel 15's janice allen is here to "educate" us about its benefits. learning in an all girl.. or all boy setting isn't a new idea. research has shown that both genders simply learn differently. an the teachers taking part in this "experiment" are seeing that first hand. nats: 53:31 "we're going to do this..stand up..." inside camden dunn's room...these eighth boys start class with a fun activity. they're encouraged to get out of their seats...and move around...taking a more active approach to.learning about language arts. 20:56 "the boys have to get up and if i can make a change in my lessons to incorporate that in somehow, i'm willing to do that.." but just next door... nat:2:27 "why do you think stacy finally snapped? bob lapadot's class of all girls is learning the same subject very differently. in a more relaxed, subdued atmosphere..geared toward multi- tasking and classroom discussion. 16:06 "it gives them a good chance to ask questions and make their own connections so they get a better idea of what they're reading." both teachers are taking part in a special pilot program that began at the start of the school year. it divides six eighth grade language arts classes... by gender. s/u 22:25 "so how do the students feel about the divided classes? a quarter of those surveyed said they didn't like it, but some who were against it at first, slowly warming up to it. girl student 6:30 "we get to do different things that are more geared toward girls and its a lot of fun." boy student 8:58 "we don't try and like be cool around the girls, just be ourselves.." the teachers are seeing benefits that far outweigh any negatives. there's been a big improvement in attitudes..and academics. students' behavior is also improved. the school hopes to extend the gender based classes into other grades...and other subjects like math. by the way, this isn't the only school using this unique approach. there are similar programs in huntington middle school and wasee middle school in syracuse. time now for a check of the forecast. newschannel</media:text>

Video: Santa Fe district leaders meet with parents over cuts

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr valign="top"><td><a href="http://www.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12447/1164636?cpt=8&wpid=6474"><img src="http://video-static.clipsyndicate.com/zStorage/clipsyndicate/15/2009/11/03/05/23/abe4687b-d129-44b0-afd3-33f86b5e1123_120x90.jpg" width="120" height="90" border="0" /></a></td><td style="padding:5px;">Leaders of the Santa Fe School District met with parents Monday to let them know how the state's $650 million shortfall could impact their child's classroom.
Under the bill that state lawmakers sent the governor, education funding would be cut less than 1%.

School leaders in Santa Fe say they've been working to keep the cuts from impacting the classroom and teachers, but said Monday they don't know if they'll be able to do that.

The Santa Fe School District has lots of red ink to deal with. Leaders say they just cut $4.5 million from the budget this spring, and are now looking at slicing up another $1.5 million from the district's $78 million budget.

Leaders say on top of those cuts, they will have to make even more cuts to transportation, education technology and other areas under the proposal state lawmakers under the proposal state lawmakers sent to the governor.

Santa Fe resident Liza Suzanne is worried how cuts could impact kids she works with outside of the school.

She had this suggestion for the governor: "Give education more money. Don't make any cuts to education."

There are basically two areas to cut from: The first being the classroom, where 85% of the district's budget is payroll.

If residents don't want cuts there, athletics and programs and activities like music may have to be cut.

Santa Fe School Board President Angelica Ruiz said, "We will have to look at extracurricular activities perhaps and extra programs, which is very, very difficult because that does even indirectly affect our kids in their success."

Some residents say cuts to extracurricular cuts would hurt, too.

Resident John Padilla said, " I want as much support to go into the classroom as possible, however with the extra curricular activities especially with sports and athletics it's important to keep those because we have really high quality student athletes."

District leaders want the public to get involved in the process, but it certainly wasn't a packed turnout for the first meeting.

They have two more meetings scheduled. The first is Saturday, November 14 from 9 a.m. to Noon, and the second is Monday November 16 from 4 -7 p.m.

Santa Fe district leaders meet with parents over cuts

Leaders of the Santa Fe School District met with parents Monday to let them know how the state's $650 million shortfall could impact their child's classroom.

The meetings will be held at the Educational Services Center at 610 Alta Vista Street in Santa Fe.

The governor has until November 12 to decide whether to sign or veto the budget bills lawmakers have sent him.
