<media:text>l me3 3 this may be hard to believe, but downtown austin is running out of condos for sale. 3 there may be less than a year's supply left, left, all new at six! kxan's "david scott" reports, with financing so tight - new downtown condos may not be available for four or five years. 3 3 3 it doesn't look possible but it is. last year 670 condo units were sold and closed on downtown..now, just 408 remain, hardly a year's supply...and you probably won't be seeing any more construction downtown for awhile. awhile. 3 3 3 3 "these are some of the tallest buildings ever built in austin, so they're very visible to the people stuck in the gridlock on mopac, the perception is there are thousands and thousands of available units." units."not true! downtown residents have doubled this decade, to 8-thousand people. but now, there are just 408 condos left, and even fewer apartments. great views, downtown convenience, but no financing available for anyone to build. build."it's already gotten tight, it's only going to get tighter. there's not a lot of room for people to come in and build condominiums downtown." downtown."what if a developer did want to build? to secure financing he'd have to pony up his own money, enough to choke a horse. horse."in real estate you want to leverage into something, that's how you increase your rate of return. there's not a lot of banks willing to loan money right now. you may have to put 50, 60, 70% down. $200-million that's a lot of money." money."over the past five years 60-thousand new homes have been built in greater austin, but just 2-thousand condos and 2-thousand apartments downtown. and with apartments unable or unlikely to convert to condos, when can we expect anything new to go up? up?"the most optimistic folks think maybe late next year there could be some construction financing, and then it takes two and a half years to break ground and build one of these. so we know on the early side four years before we can bring any extra supply into downtown and we only have 408 units to last that four years." 3 3 3 3 the good news is, if you own a downtown condo now, it's value could appreciate as the supply dwindles. you 'scould make some money....but that's if you can find a prospective buyer who can secure financing. money's tight.david scott,</media:text>

"we struggled with the fact that the general public thought that they might get ig swine flu byfl eating pork, which is not the case." and the case is that the h-1-n -1 just piled on to the problem this industry is already facing. "this down cycle has al most been two years in the point in time." a time where feed continues c to rise while il the price of pork remains the same. although the price of pork is slicing down at the market. it's weighg it down financially for all pork producers. "it's going to bet'in re al iss meat from other countries will be on the shelf. "we have very little control over the way those animals ar e raised and the way the meat has been inspected." but in the meantime...terr y's hoping h-1- n-1 expires before the pork industry does. in terre haute with photo p journalist ryan ward, kate greene news 10. it's expected that thousands us of hog farms across the country will shut down before the struggle ends. in other tonight..</media:text>

<media:text>8's annie rourke. at ace of fades in wolcott, they take care of their customers.. whether little..or big..but a new bill.. is now cutting into their business.. salons in wolcott are suddenly being charged an extra sewage fee.they're billing on water they think we might use for each station but we're on a meter so how should we have to pay that. it's not for the sinks.. these are mandatory, you have to have them.the sewage company doesn't have to treat for chemicals because of these stop-valves.they're being charged for how many chairs they have. at their cosmetology school.. that's 16 chairs. the cost.. 175 for the first chair.. 140 for every one after.. totalling 2-thousand 200 dollars extra year.i mean, these are dry stations, you're not using any water, why are you charging them for it? instructor paulette venditti has been styling hair for 19 years and says she's never seen anything like it.no, has to be up and down. she says, this is a hands-on industry.. you have to have a mannequin at a station to train on.. so their options are.. take out chairs and lose students.. or pay thousands extra. apparently an arcane law.. on the books for decades.. only being enforced now.especially if it went into effect in 1971 and they're bringing it up now, that's 38 years ago. wolcott born and bred.. these folks say, they want to stay here.. but can't understand this.it's hard enough to survive as it is and then you go throw this on top of it, it really tops it off. the mayor has not returned our calls for</media:text>

      <media:credit>WLUK FOX 11 Green Bay</media:credit>
<media:text>week. the holiday season is often a great time to make extra cash with a part-time, temporary job.. but not so fast this year. the national retail federation says on average, department stores increase their workforce 12 percent during the holidays, but maybe not this year.. fox 11's lindsay veremis has multiple views. &amp;lt; &gt; for retailers there's busy.. and then there's the holidays. sandy: the busy season starts from september and goes through the end of the year. make hay when the sun shines and that's the hay for the retail business. christmas displays have begun dotting the halls.. but, another holiday fixture-- help wanted signs-- are a bit harder to find. the fox river mall says its stores will generally boost staff levels for the season.. but this year's sales projections are calling for moderation. john: in the past they might have hired ten people maybe this year they'll hire eight people. mall manager john burgland says holiday sales are expected to drop a percent this year, so retailers are doing what they can to reduce expenses.. limiting inventory and often, their workforce. lindsay: stores also have fewer hours to fill. this year the mall has tightened holiday hours to help cut costs and boost retailer profits. some stores, like younkers are hiring temporary help at the same level as last year. but the bulk in the area are cutting back, leaving competition for those remaining jobs fierce. children's clothier gymboree has already received 30 applicants for holiday work. sandy: "this has been a year like i have never seen before. we have anywhere from five to six phone calls a week just out of the blue asking if we have any holiday help available." country village is hiring, but will add fewer positions than last year.. sandy: we're looking for our employees that we have to work faster and smarter and that' )s the expectation, we're all working a little smarter and faster this year. retailers say the holiday season may not be a time of abundance in staffing, but they're hoping it will be in sales. in grand chute, lindsay veremis, fox 11 news most stores have finished making their holiday hires, but there are still a few jobs available. the fox river mall will be open until 9 p-m the first two weeks of december. then until 10</media:text>

<media:text>local economies...and liecfe was good. but in the 1990's, t he0' millions of lobsters lo mysteriously died off, and , they haven't c ome back. ck fish erman declared erbankruedptcy, bo ats were sold...but a few still struggle to do what they ha love ...but they say a connecticut titradition is in danger of di osappearing. news channel 8's jamie muro js oins oi us now live w ith a look itat a lost legacy. jamie. y.a record number of nupounds lobsters were caught in waters of the long island sound in 1998. a record low happened just last year. just over 200 lobster licenses were issued this year - down from 700 in 1980 - another record low. state officials say you can make a living doing this anymore - and for the proud lobsterman, it's a forecast they have come to expect - but one they just can't accept.n' (opening music montage of sea scene)it beckoned, and they listened. for when the salt of the sea met the salt of their blood, a love affair was born. they are new englanders, they are lobstermen, and lolike the shellfish they so hungrily pursuehey are disappearing. (tape two - sound only!!!) (56:08 - "we're water people. r le it's donet's dead!")(fade to black)(nat sequence)(1:12 - (weather radio) "saturday night, rain with a chance of thunderstorms in thrse evening) (3:35 - "fire her up!")(nats 3:44 - boat fires)the sun is promising a dazzling day on the long island sound. (nat hit tape one)(4:07 - boat horn) to the hopeless romantic, this scene is the stuff of new england maritime lore. a father and son set to tackle n the dayith d fishing tackle . (tape three - - let us see this soundbi te) (19:10 - "what do i do for a living? i'm a commercial lobster fisherman. how many people can say that?)" sixty-two year old xtgus buo rtolf (nat hit tape one)(27:36 - "i'm the lastf the last!") nd his 35 year old son gus junior would ther land the lobster than do anything else. (15:30 - "lotta hard work for nothin'!) or (46:56 - "i tried not to love it out here, i or (46:56 - "i triored not:5 work for nothin'!) (15:30 - "lotta (1 hard anything else.the lobster than do would rather land son th gus junior would rather land the lobster than do anything an an else.(15:30 - "lotta hard or ot (46:56 - "i tried not to love it out here, i tried to get of the boat. i tried to get ago. i couldn't do it.)a cre few lobsters to trap.(nat hit tape one)looks at conch, throws it c in bucket.)to catch conch. theraren't many thof them either.(14:34 - "what do i ha hope for? i hope to ca ftch some tc conch. "lot of it.." "lot of it. it's not going to happen though.")(take shot of histoichos/m t it breathe a bitthe atburtolfs are living a legacy that has at graced connecticut's 's shorelines for generations. every boat carried with it a fisherman who had the promn ise e of making a healthy profit, coupled with a sense of pride and passion. (tape one - sound only)(48:57 - "lobster fishing is a 300 year old tradition. it's just like apple pie, baseball. it's part of america.")(file video?)...and part of connecticut. but in the late 1990's, the sweet he et specialty of the soundied s offy the millions! research was done, but no solid answers. the burtolfs have their opinions - clam pi dredging, pesticides, pollution. but the lobster have not come back.(49:33 - new england is lobsters. no matter how you look at it. and for america, and americans to let it die out, not care about what we're doing to our water and our oceans, it's a sad day.)whatever it was, the waters became a graveyard, the , call of the sea went ssilent, and with d itent a way of life. huneds of watermen had to do something they had th never done before ork on rethe land. many set sail for new n states - and better opportunities. (nats tape three)(4:51 - gus grunts "uhh hh!") hhgus junior went from stacking trapstape three)(19:44 - gus stacking br icks)o stacking stone. he owns and operates owhis own construction business. the lobsterman does this - to keep the "island girl" on the water. (31:42 - i have a love/hate thing going on right now. i love to be out here, and i hate being on land. te but the land is making m e the money right now, and this isn't!) (music up)so is a legacy lost? eg (take shot 3:47 - gus kisses crab) is the love affair ai over? there were rehundreds of dedicated lobstermen in te 1998oday, the estimate is as low as...five. (13:05 - it really wrecks me.) connecticut's shoreline hasn't lost its appeal. the towns have retained their colonial feel - the lighthouses still guard the rocky shores. but for the lobsterman, the sea may still becn...but the question for the next generation...will anyone be there to listen? ? (28:06 - "i'm a 300 year old tradition. it i'm the last of the mohegans. so it means something to some.")." (cut to setting sun tape one) (music out) some experts believe warmer waters in the sound also contributed to the die-off, but the bertolfs say there were warm waters back in the 1970's and 1980's, and the lobsters survived.the entire sound has suffered, but the state says the biggest losses were west of the connecticut river.one hope - the v-notch program, started tm,hree years ago. this is where lobsterman voluntairly put a "v-notch" on the tails of the females and return them to the water, wher e they won't be harvested...allowing them to reproduce.finally, a state official tells me alot of guys keep their licenses just so th ey can keep them. but again, the estimate fon,r the e number of full-time lobster-only fisherman...about five.we're live in new haven, jamie muro,</media:text>

<media:text>even though the workers are called temps, the fact that they're getting called offers a slifer of ho slif of ho a sliver of hope for jobs. &gt;&gt; the first thing you want to look at is the temporary help industry. &gt;&gt; companies hired a lot more temporary workers last month and that's one soft indicator employment may be easing towards a turn around. &gt;&gt; jed boal tells us utah's chief labor economist uses that figure as his came nar i canary in the coal mine. &gt;&gt; it hopefully means the economy is coming back to life. a surge in temporary jobs means companies here in utah and across the country need to add workers, but they're not quite ready to commit to full-time jobs &gt;&gt; garrett young lost his job in march. but sos staffing found him temporary jobs in customer service, accounting, and cla clerical services. he picked up experience and paid the bills &gt;&gt; i've made a lot of money through sos staffing considering where i was before, and now i have a lot of experience and right now i'm planning ongoing to school and it's made things easier. &gt;&gt; last month temporary agencies nationwide added 34,000 jobs. in spite of a double digit unemployment rate, more temp work is good news &gt;&gt; a lot of these temporary positions will actually hire you on directly. &gt;&gt; i've always used the temporary help agency as my canary in the coal mine in terms of looking at the economy. &gt;&gt; the chief economist of the utah department of workforce services does not know the number of temporary jobs created in utah, but those job postings picked up in september. &gt;&gt; it's probably the most sensitive industry to quick turnings in the economy, whether it's adding jobs or letting jobs go. &gt;&gt; employers still hesitate with full-time jobs, as long as they question the recovery. but kelly service ises optimistic about the rise in demand for temps. &gt;&gt; the companies start with temporary employees, and if they can sustain them, that growth and the activity within their organization then they will hire those employees on. &gt;&gt; when the economy was tumbling the temp industry rapidly lost jobs &gt;&gt; is it going to blossom into a longer trend? we kind of think it will but the's no guarantee at this moint in time th point in time that it will but this is the first turn in this industry for two years. &gt;&gt; jarregarrett young is headed back to school and the temporary work helped him stay positive. &gt;&gt; it's been really good to be in the work force lately, especially after being laid off. &gt;&gt; whether employers are ready to take the next step and add full-time jobs will determine a lot about the xheed future of our economy. bruce, deanie? &gt;&gt; we'll be hopeful, thank you, jed boal</media:text>
