<media:text>the food fight isn't over. the albuquerque school district is catching heat for its cold sandwich solution to 100- thousand dollars in unpaid lunch bills. earlier this month - a-p-s decided students with debts... would get cheese sandwiches for lunch. tonight - the district took a verbal beating from upset community members. news 13's maria medina is live at aps headquarters. the public forum wrapped up here a few hours ago. only one person spoke in favor of the cheese sandwich policy tonight - out of the dozen who stepped up to the podium. woman: "194525 we're punishing kids and we're punishing poor kids 28." if there wasn't any indication a- p-s's cheese sandwich policy had upset some people-- or in at least one case, caused embarrassment: woman: "194736 my little girl is very emotional, she is embarrassed to go to school and talks about it every evening 43." tonight - it became very clear. one by one - the district's board listened as some shook fingers: elizabeth dyer/aps mother: "193833 i really think that aps does an excellent job overall but i think you got it wrong this time." 38 others claimed to have an inside look int cafeterias: estella madrid/retired aps employee: "193553 so much food is just thrown away you see, 57." even the smallest speaker came with a story. only one defended the district. woman: "193148 and never has a child been turned away without a lunch 52." but because a vote on the policy hadn't been put on the agenda, board members couldn't make any decisions tonight: delores griego/board member: "20 there has to be another way to handle this tomorrow 23." dyer: "195656 i think they need to get off their butts 00." many parents have felt that way since january fifth, when the district decided it would serve the cold cheese sandwiches to students who fell behind in lunch payments. the new mexico collaboration to fight hunger was even willing to help pay off the debt if a-p-s reversed the policy tonight. nancy pope/nm collaboration: "200341 we deserve to do better for our children 44." the board plans to hold a special meeting on the policy on monday. we're told the superintendent wants more parents who qualify for free or reduced lunch to apply. back to you. thanks, maria. as of today, parents have paid off 40-thousand of the 140-thousand dollar lunch debt. more than 50- thousand of that bill students who could've qualified for free or reduced lunches if they'd applied. no a-p-s student will have to worry about being served a peanut butter sandwich. the district has shelved all peanut butter products as a precaution because of a nationwide salmonella outbreak. tainted peanut butter linked to a georgia plant has sickened nearly 500 people in 43 states. so far, no illness is reported in new mexico.</media:text>

THAT'S HOW MUCH MONEY A-P-S SPENDS EACH YEAR ON STUDENTS FOR THEIR SOCCER GAMES. THE COSTLY BILL IS BLAMED ON A-P-S BEING FORCED TO DRIVE ATHLETES TO BERNALILLO ... BECAUSE THE DISTRICT DOESN'T HAVE ITS OWN SOCCER FACILITY. BUT THAT WILL SOON CHANGE. JEFF MAHER IS HERE TO EXPLAIN. JEFF. ON THE WESTSIDE OF ALBUQUERQUE, A-P-S IS GETTING READY TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION WORK ON A SIX- MILLION DOLLAR SOCCER FIELD COMPLEX. THE COMPLEX WILL SAVE A-P-S A GOOD CHUNK OF CHANGE IN THE LONG RUN -- BECAUSE UP TO THIS POINT THE DISTRICT HAS HAD TO GO FAR OUT OF ITS WAY TO GET KIDS TO THEIR GAMES. 'to put a buffer between the middle school and the elementary school, we are building a soccer complex which is going to have four artificial turf mondo soccer fields which are going to be lighted' NOT FAR FROM VOLCANO VISTA HIGH SCHOOL NEAR PASEO DEL NORTE AND UNIVERSE SITS AN EMPTY FIELD THAT WILL SOON BE TRANSFORMED INTO A BIG SOCCER FIELD COMPLEX WITH SEATING FOR 200, AND A CONCESSION STAND. SOMETHING A-P-S HAS NEEDED FOR A LONG TIME. 'most of our soccer teams right now have to travel to Bernalillo to play soccer, so these will hopefully be completed in August and we will no longer have our soccer teams go to Bernalillo because we will be at the new soccer complex' A-P-S HAS PAID THE PRICE FOR USING BERNALILLO'S FACILITY. THE 200-THOUSAND DOLLAR ANNUAL BILL COMES FROM TRANSPORTATION COSTS FOR ROUGHLY ONE-THOUSAND STUDENT ATHLETES AND THE COST FOR RENTING THE FIELD ON A REGULAR BASIS. A-P-S WILL STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR MAINTAINING ITS OWN FACILITY, BUT DISTRICT OFFICIALS ESTIMATE THEY'LL END UP SAVING ABOUT 40-THOUSAND DOLLARS PER YEAR, POSSIBLY MORE IF GAS PRICES GO BACK UP. ALL A-P-S HIGH SCHOOLS WILL USE THE NEW SOCCER COMPLEX FOR GAMES AND TOURNAMENTS, BUT YOUTH SOCCER TEAMS WILL BE ABLE TO USE IT AS WELL. 'the westside, as people already know, we don't have enough recreation fields out there as it is, and so this was also built with the community in mind' AGAIN, THE COMPLEX IS EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED IN AUGUST. A-P-S OFFICIALS SAY ONCE IT'S DONE, THEY MAY CONSIDER EXPANDING THEIR SOCCER PROGRAM FROM JUST HIGH SCHOOL --- TO MIDDLE SCHOOL AS </td></tr></table>
