The annual spring water release on the Missouri River is being delayed by about a week and may not even happen. Today the Army Corps of Engineers said the change in policy is stemming from flood concerns down river. Officials say mother nature is the overall deciding factor on whether the spring rise will come from upstream reservoirs. Heavy rainfall has caused some flooding this week in central Missouri. The corps is also seeing larger than expected flows from tributary rivers feeding into the Missouri River. The annual release of extra water is meant to encourage spawning by the pallid sturgeon, a fish on the endangered species list. The spring rise is designed to mimic increases that used to occur naturally before dams were built on the river. « Less
