of my fellow firefighters. just trying to make changes to the department and make it for everybody." everybody." the surprise here was hildreth was not expecting to be named district chief until next week. but it was obviously a nice surprise for her. it could become the future of construction... we're talking about building blocks called insulated concrete forms. they are mainly styrofoam and seem to be gaing popularity. our adam krueger takes a look at a home being built in seguin that's taking advantage of this technology. technology. <<the walls of this house are lined with the word "apex". that's the newest manufacturer of insulated concrete forms or i.c.f.'s. these blocks (dated september of 2007) were the first to leave the apex factory in arizona, making this home in seguin the first one in texas built with apex blocks.rick slaughter / texas country builders: we need to use less energy and we need to use less wood, we've known that forever here and so this is a way to do it right here. adam krueger: at first glance these blocks look a lot like concrete and in fact 10% of them are made up of concrete, the other 90% is simply styrofoam, as you can see they're no match for my pen, but as soft as they look... they're actually extremely strong.the blocks are held together with a concrete grid that fills these holes. the final product is so strong that it can sustain wind speeds of two-hundred miles per hour, and it can handle two-thousand degrees fahrenheit for four hours.joe ward / homeowner: the strength, the safety, the comfort... all kind of add up. joe ward will be moving into this home, he says his choice to pay an extra ten percent for these i.c.f. blocks was a no-brainer. the material is resistant to mold, mildew, and termites. and its insulation is superior to traditional construction.rick: it's real common for us to hear people say that their utility bills are from $38 to $60 a month and that's it, and so it starts paying for itself real quick.and not only are you doing good for yourself, you're doing good for the environment. these blocks mostly use recycled styrofoam... and the result could be even more savings in your budget.rick: a lot of mortgage companies are giving as much as a half percent off your mortgage if you green build and so this falls into that category as well.and by the time this home is finished in march, you won't even be able to tell it that it's held together with styrofoam, unless of course you catch a glance at joe's utility bills. adam krueger, fox news at nine.>> apex already has a large shipment of blocks headed south to the rio grande valley to build houses that are better suited for hurricanes. we should also mention there is a san antonio based company called amazon grid-wall that has been using similar technology for years. why at some point this year, every teacher in san antonio will be asked to show their thumb. thumb. which city has so many overweight citizens, the
